As already announced a public meeting in the interests of Imperial Federation is to be held im this city in the near future. The principal speaker on the occaision will be Rev. Dr. Wilson, who perhaps more than any other man in this Province, has studied the question, and whose addresses thereon have been highly spoken of by the press generally, Heis President of the St. John branch of the lmperial] Federation League and is under engagements to dis- cuss the question in several centres during What Dr. Wilson’s views are may be gathered from the following copied from the Methodist, of which he is the editor, but which in a lecture is dealt with more in detail : ‘* We believe our interest lies Irrespective of party, the ques the difficulties of novedy or the obstacles tc be overcome but, we are satistied that when the time for decided action arrives, the men for the hour will be in readiness. | sagacity and broad-thoughted statesmanship our national leaders equal to the greatest occasions. tory that is continually repeating itself in other lines will not failto do so when the circumstances require it. *‘And the signa of the times are every- way encouraging. The spirit of the age is opposed to isolation, kindred communities are coming more closely together, weak and petty states have now no chance to live, much fess to succeed, and no statetman to- day advocates disintegration. Scott Act nt the West. Six,—A glorious and prosperous time seems to be at handfor the rum sellers of thisend of PrinceCounty. In Mr. F. Peters’ type-written letter to Inspector Brodyrick, he says: ‘It is mot prudent to get too many convictions against one person, as he may go to jail and not pay the fine.” Why, now when a rum seller is convicted once he can simply appeal the case, and keep it in court as long as possible, and quite safe in selling away, as the advice to the Inspec- tor is that it would not be prudent to con- victhim again until the other fine was paid. Evidently the Leader of the Government sets more value on the $50 fine than he does on the suppression of the liquor trafic. I am sure that the Attorney- General will find his ** Scott Act” receipus from his Western end Inspector rather small according to his two first prosecu- tions, a8 the parties fined can now stalk around and snap their fingers. At the same time Brodyrick can, with extended arm, shake a type-written letter and ex- claim, ‘*see here, where the Leader of the Government endorses what I have done because the last fines were still unpaid.” Verily, this is a great temperance country, where you can buy licenses at tive dollars apiece. From all over the province the reports come in that the rot has affected the crop to a far greater extent than for some years. The peculiarity of the disease is that it first effected the tops, and in a few days whole acres were black and wilted. The rains seem to wash the poison from the stalk down into the earth, where it effected the potato, causing not a dry rot as in some years, but a watery decaying rot, completely destroying the whole potato, after it became once affected. The ravages of the disease is not confined to New Brunswick, for all over Maine the reports are forthcoming of the same potato rob, The Aroostook Republican deduces a lesson to the Aroostook farmers from the rust and rot that are effecting the potato crop The Republican says : damage to this year’s crop will result ig good, because, while it is of such a character as not to cripple the farming community, it suffivient to teach them word, ‘‘caution, a a GQeopreunu vanwn the better is the prospec t “ & re —- ene ro t for their ultima provements and for their supplies.” The h}| damaged potato crop, the farmers of Aroostook large crops of hay and graix.” And the same e|can be said very trathfully of this province. ++ Ore News Notes.
