R-2lMtf ln justice to the whole provinve some explanation should be publicly givm of the closing ol the Hillsbor- ough Consolidated School. As the matter stands at present the public know only that the school has been closed, that one ofthe rnust_ muniti- cent gifts ever made tu the Ill”0Vll\l'°l by one 01 her most public spirited sons has apparently been thrown. hack in his face without even rl word of thanks or of gratitude. Some ex pianatlon, we repeat, is iinperatiie, in justice to the province, and we fshall luok for it and will cheerfully Sud space for it in ’I‘he Guardian when lt colnes. The history of the ease as it all* pears to the public at present iS "UBI Seven years ago, at an enormous cost. and with the full coliscnt of those muse directly interested, Sir William Mclloliald had a magnificent school building erected at Mount Herbert lor the uso of the districts of Mount Herbert, Hazelbrook, Huubury and Cross Roads, consolidated by mutual consent into one school district. The extraordinary coat of conduct- ing the school was defrayed by rlir William, the districts being called up-_ on for no more taxation than under the former system. During the sixth and seventh years the tax was slight- ly increased, pmoiintiug to forty cents on the hundred dollars, property vnl- ilati0lJ, Sir Willinrn still tlefraylng the extraordinary cost. For some reason, presumably fear of future taxation, Hazelhrouk drop- ped out of the consolidation four years ago, and two years later Cross Roads also dropped out, leaving Mount- Herbert and Blinhury in charge of the school. Previous to the annual meeting in June last opposition to the school developed. Bunbury postponed its meeting until alter the Mount Her- bert meeting, prepared to follow suit. Mount Herbert, in which the school is situated and which really controls the situation, at its annual meeting voted, thirteen to eleven, to abolish the consolidated school and rcturn Bunbtlry, unable to do othcrwi_l¢_» ll* so returned to the single district sys- tem. It was estimated that the consoli- dated school could have been carried on this your with the same taxation, as last year, with the exception oi the vans for carrying the children to and from school. The success of the consolidated school, we understand, has never been questioned. Since it was organized some silty of its pupils have Passed through Prince of Wales College- Dm' ing the twenty years previous to con- solidation only four or live pupils from the four districts passed through Prince ni Wales. There has been il large attendance of pupils from outside districts, last year there being from forty to fifty, each pay- ing a. tuition fee oi five dollars, and the number has been increasing year- ly, so that, from the outside atleast, the future of the school looked prom- ising. Why was the school closed? Why, after accepting the principle, after proving its success, after taking, as a tree gift for seven years, the best that modern science could give in the way of a public school, hilly equip- ped for Domestic Science teaching, and for Manual Training, a credit and a boon to the whole province, why was it abandoned? It is quite conceivable tllat the burden of carrying such an institu- tion, which should he-and undoubt- edly wes-a benefit to the whole province, might fall too heavily upon the districts immediately concerned. This however does not appear to have been the case as tha“‘tsxatlon was not excessive. lf the burden proved too heavy, it should ,be made u provincial burden, and, -at least the excess, carried by the provincial government. To close and' abandon such a school and such a gift, with- out an explanation is, we feel, a re- flection upon ths province. " If there is any explanatioii, or our information as given above not correct, we shall gladly give lt.
