Stanley Cup hockey challenges is com-
mencing. Trusteea‘Sweetland _ und Ross
have received within the past few days
two challenges for the cup, one from
the Manitoba Hockey League and one on
behalf of the Nova Scotia Hockey League.
The championship of the Manitoba
League is not yet decided, though the
Rat Portage Thistles are certain to win
sut,and the challenge is issued by the
eague itself in preparation for a trip east
of whatever club happens to win the
championship of the western organiza-
tion.
The challenge from Nova Scotia comes
from the Amherst Ulub, which won the
chunipionshlp last year, u.n1i~1till holds it.
`i‘he trustees, however, after their experi-
ence wlth the Yukon team and with some
other teams that have.eo1ne from a dis-
tance to compete for the cup, are not
likely to accept this challenge. They feel
that it is desirable that any club which
wishes to play for the cup should first
have proved its calibre beyond all question
by its performance in first-class company
outsldeltaewnieiigue, and the Ainhei-st
club will probably he written to that ef-
feet.
With regard to the western challenge,
however, the Miuiitoha teams have so
often proved their ability to meet on even
terms the best hockey that tlic east can
provide, that there cun be no question
about their title to play, and the trustees
are therefore certain to ucccpt the Manitoba
challenge.

son, twenty-seven years old, a resident
of Bangor (Me.), attempted suicide hy
cutting his throat. Anderson came here
yesterday from Maine, “here he had
been employed hi a logging crimp near
Bangor. He was slaying with J. D.
Hoogue, an acquaintance. This morning
Anderson borrowed I-Iooguc's razor, and
cut his throat. At thecity hospital it
was stated that he would recover.
