JANUARY 4. 193a '82-?- Fé STRONG ANNUAL STATEMENT BY ROYAL BANK OF CANADA Tom Assets Stand at slosslaozo- o: Thls Amount Liquid Assets iii-o $355,920,912, Equal to 52.06% o! Liabilities to the Public-Includ- ed Therein Are Cash Holdings o! $164,030,724, Being Over 24% 0| Public Liabilities - Savings Deposits Well Maintained. The annual statement lust issued to shareholders oi The Royal Bank oi Canada supplies iurther striking evidence oi the satisfactory man- ner in which leading Canadian lin- ancial institutions have ’ through the unsettled conditions o: tho past year. Every part of the statement reflects the strength o! the banks position. Curtailed in- dustrial and trading activity is re- flected in lower commercial loans, and an increase in liquid assets. The latter show a marked increase over the previous year, and are now equal to 52.86% oi its lihbili- ties to the public. Included in them are cash holdings which alone aggregate over 24% oi public lia- bilities. Savings. deposits have been well maintained, particularly ‘in iace oi the large Government loans put out during the Yell‘- . Earnings, clue to lesened business- activity throughout the country, show a slight recession, but were nmply suilicient to cover dividends ‘ and thc usual appropriations. Strong Liquid Position The statement, which is for the financial year ended November 30th, shows total assets 0i $765.- 512.920. or this amount. liquid assets amount to ‘the larEB 811111 0f $355,929,015, equal to 52.86% of all liabilities to the pubiic- C1511 holdings, aggregating $164,630,724 and iormlng one of the striking fea- tures oi the report, represent over 24% oi liilbilitics to the public. Dominion and Provincial Govern- alcnt securities are 539.440.044- gompnred with $85,473,058 M. the end oi the previous year, and Can- ‘dlon municipal securities and Brit- i511, foreign and colonial public iecurlties 5203150444. 1111 1111i" $24»- 1341.818. The various loan accounts reflect current business conditions, and are down substantially from the $37,158,111. Reduced import snd export trade account tor the reduc- tion in Letters oi’ Credit to $20,- 092,951 from $28,906,506. Deposits at Satisfactory Level Deposits have been well main- tained. Total deposits at $610,- 004,143 show a reduction ior the year o! less than 7%, irom $64,- 795,718. Savings deposits make s. very gratifying showinz. 511d at $468,391,153 are down less than $8,000,000. In view oi the large Government loans floated during the year, the total would indicate a tendency among depositors to keep ample cash balances and to add steadily to their savings. Non-in- terest deposits, which ln the main are the working balances oi busi- ness a d farming customers, re- flect t e curtailment oi trade activ- ity alld lower prices, ebing down to $128,983,165 from $170,913,903. Shareholders will be interested in seeing that the reduction in loan accounts has more than oiTset the reduction in commercial deposits. At the same time, the strong iiqllid position means that just as soon as trade recovers the bank is in a. position to take care oi the increas- ed requlrements oi its customers. Earnings have held up ‘well, es- pecially in view oi the lessened business activity and the lower in- terest rates at reserve centres. Profits for the year were $4,861,049, compared with $5,448,327. They fully covered dividend requirements oi $3,850,000; contribution to Olli- cers’ Pension Fund $200,000; appro- priation for bank premises $200,000 and reserve for Dominion Govem- ment taxes $600,000. For a number oi years the bank has carried an unusually large amount in undivided profits. This year the Directors have authorized a transfer oi $3,000,000 oi this amount to investment depreciation 1m: ixnannonsroiyly_qpgaa,qigi_v_ sfiicxs, BONDS, QUO TATIONS ilslliolii iocu uuiu oooliuoiis Corrected For Every Wednesday and Saturday Issue Yonil-rlllly": lIllll-kl‘! was poorly nt- tended.
