Monsignor Macdonald Particulars f the Celebration at the Convent. | | | | | | The celebration of the golden jubilee of} the Very Rev. Monsignor James Macdon- ald V.G, pastor of St. Andrew's was a pleasing feature in the closing exercises at Notre Dame Convent, which took place onthe 27th of June. It has already been favor- ably alluded to and to-day we take pleasure in giving a more detailed accovnt for the gratification of the numerous friends of the worthy prelate, to whom it was dedi- cated, and of the institution on which it reflects so much credit. The exercises were held in the music hall, which was tastefully decorated for the occasion. Appropriate mottoes adorned the wa'ls, as ** Quid Retribuam Domino,” ** Magnificat anima mea Domintum,” ** la te Domine, Speravi.” Covepicuous among the inscriptions were the date, ‘* June 26, 1842,” ** June 26, 1892,” and *‘*50” in gilt letters. Monsignor Macdoaald little dresmed of a celebration in his huvor, having cor- sented to preside at the distribution cf prizes in the absence of Bishop Macdonale, tle was, therefore, not a little su p ised, on entering the department, to see the featal decurations and was uti'l more taken aback by ths programme of exercises, which read as follows : PROGRAMME, Music—‘‘ Marche Triumphale ” ON, ok sins ca ceseds cbs eeredéeeeees ewes Piano, Harp and Violin—** The Blue Belis of BOOGIE bins ct dec eheedeciecguscst vas Cetictibente TROOCWIRGG, « « éo0.oden ccd cccccncs ** The Son that Reached my Heart.”........ The ‘ Blue Bells of Scotland,” on harp, pisne and violin, el- icited well merited applause, and the cal- isthenic exe cises by the younger pupils won smiles of approbation from all. The solo, ** The Sony that Reached my Heart,” | was listened to with pleasure, and was fol- lowed by a dialogue, eatiiled ** A Mystery, and its Solution.’ This was the central puint of interest in the programme. It was opened by one of the pupils, who spoke of the bright promises of vacation and alluded to the shaduw cast over the commencement day by the absence of the much loved bishop of the diovese. She was interrupted by another pup'l, whose curivsity was excited by the dates and_in- scriptions on the walls. As they con- versed together, wondering what ali might sign fy, 4 number of young girls attired ia white and wearing white veils, entered, Each bore a rolled parchment. They an- nounced themselves as messengers of the past, and resisting the entreaties of the most curious of the pupils regarding the inscriptions, related incidents from the life of a ** just man, dear to angels and mon.” Oe recalled his bapisr, when the name of the apostle, surnamed the just, was conferred on the yourg christian, whose spiritual birth was celebrated with so wuch joy, A second alluded in atouch- ing maaner to his first communion, when he felt the call to a sublime vocation. All bide her wel. come, Then a pupil stepped forward and read the following ADDRESS : To Very Rev. Mgr. James Macdon ld, V. G., Pastor ot St. Andrew’s, P. E. Island. Monsignor,—-It is poetically said that the last song of the swan is the sweetest, the last rays of the sun the deepest, the ruddiest, and we now realize that the last hours of ou scholastic year are most assuredly the bright- est, as they will be richest in delightful mems ories. We have listened with emotion, Monsignor, to the story of your life as it has been briefly told, and we cannot but feel that more elo- quent tongues than ours are required to cel: « brate in a fitting manner this sacred family festival, this pious anniversary of your ordin- ation, of your fifty years ot faithful servive in God's church. But although this golden jubilee cxl'ls surely for tej icing, congratue lation and festive gathering we are aware that your hamility forbade any dem nstration | on the part of your reverend friends or your attacted parishioners. We elso know that, vee it not foran innocent stratagem whi: h | ured you to preside at our Distribution in the plsce of our much loved Bishop, we would not this eveniog have the honor of your presence | nor the gratification of commemorating in | our modest way this thrice solemn festival, | Our hewts are ia full sympathy with the | event, and respond as the chords of a musi¢al | instrument when touched by the artist’s hand. Monsignor Macdon:ld was deeply touched by the loving tribute offered him, and responded in teeling terms He said he had kept the date of the anniversary a secret, but that the ladies found it out and published it. He alluded to the grave thoughts which the event awakened ad concluded by congratulating the youag lidi g and their preceptresses on the detightful entertainment just ,iven Rev.
