Now it so happens that churches and
people alike have wandered far outside of
the strict observance prescribed in Mosaic
and prophetic days. To begin with, we
hury the dead much more frequently on
Sunday than on other days, not of necess-
lty but asa. matter of convenience. This
ought not to be. Moreover our churches'
are opened for anniversary services to
military or fraternal organizations which
march through our streets in inilitarv
array with bugls and drum, and our
clergyman by conducting the religious
services in this connection seem to lend
countenance to such demonstrations on
the Sunday.
But some may perhaps condone the
Sunday funeral or parade on the ground
‘that it is connected with religious service
and is not servils labor, or pursuing a
business calling in the ordinary sense of
the word. Such persons are, however
well aware that the livery stables in
Charlottetown are open for tratlic and
every available horse is out on ii. fine Sun-
day and the ferry boats ply to and from
Southport and Rocky Point These seem
to be very ordinary calllngs. >Where is
the rlilfereuce, say, between t-he Rocky
Point Ferry and an excursion steamer on
aSundayi Can we then rouse the Pro-
vince to a crusade against the possible
running of a trolley car on _Sunday with
out being prepared also to take action
against the ferries, the livery stables &c.,
in their Sundnylworkf ,
And then there are the eight or nine
drugstores, We would- he glad to find
them coming to an agreement that only
one alternately should open on Sunday.
That would sntfice for the real wants of
the citv. Asit is we have eight or nine
shops open for business at various hours
of the Sunday. The closing can only be
effected by agreement. It will be seen
that the subject is a very complex one.
If we are to stop the man who hires u.
horse at the stable for a Sunday drive,
what are we to do with the man who is
rich enough to keep a horse and carriage
and drives out purely for pleasure on
Sunday( And if a man may drive on
Sunday in his family carriagc,shall we say
to the poor man, you shall not row in a
