Since that time everything possible was done to keep it in working trim, but the corrosion of the iron deck plates was inevitable. This year it was found necessary to either re- place or reinforce this 1-4" iron decking. The difficulty of the job was evidenced by the con- tract figure of $8,000 tendered ‘by a New Glasgow firm. The local officials considered this an exorbi- tant price, and determined to re- pair the scow themselves. An ori- ginai scheme was hit upon of cov- ering the corroded iron plates with a‘ regular ‘wooden ship's deck. solidly bolted to the iron and thoroughly caulked and tarred. This would cost approximately $1,200, and, with proper care, would prove even more lasting than a new iron deck. And so the Job was started. The wharf for the past few days a. number oi’ mechanics are at work repairing the scow. Tho racket of chipping hammers and the whir- ring of the air drills boring their 2,500 bolt-holes through the deck- plates is continuous. The wooden deck boards, (native red spruce milled and kiln dried) have been fitted and laid, and seven cauikers are finishing up with oakum and pitch. Iron and woodareheingse- curely bolted togeter into one solid deck, which will be not only as good as new but better than new for it will he corrosion-proof. This cheap and practical method of doing the work will no doubt be carried out on other scows when the necessity arises. i Cre- dit for the scheme, which means a big saving of public money, as the replacing of the iron deck would cost many times the amount, is entirely due to the officials here. The work is being carried out by local men under the foreman- ship of Capt. Martin, late of Dredge No. 10.
