While in charge of the Legation, the command- ant of the purte of San Jose, because a British citizen whom he had summoned before him did not appear, seized this Britisher, whore name was Magee, and caused him tobe given 200 strokes with a piece of canein public. Disraeli, who was theo the British Premier, fordered the British Pacific squadron at the Covsul’s dispoea] to demand full reparation. Ad- miral Cochrane, with eix warships, came tothe port. An ultimatum was sent to the Government, allowing 24 hours for the payment of $50,000 indemnity to Magee and the salute of the British ships.
