The new enterprise in the manufacture of soap, which the above firm have been the first to start on this Island, deserves well to succeed. The quality of soap manufactured by them is equal if not superior to any soaps imported here. Such being the ease, our merchants should give them their orders rather than sending them away to foreign dealers. CURRENT NOTES. The various Pacific Railways have com- menced a war of rates. The ravages of fever in Mexico are re- ported to be increasing. Only 652 yards remain te bore of railway tunnel under the Mersey. George Alexandre Phallis, Grecian states man and jurisconsulate, is dead, aged seventy-nine. Simpson says that when he asked the girl who is now his wife to marry him she said, **T don't mind,” and she never has minded, The failure of Ferd, Mayer & Co., of New York, woollens, with liabilities esti- mated from $1,250,000 to $1,750,000 is an- nounced. George Vanderbilt, fourth son of Wm. H. Vanderbilt, has ‘‘entered journalism,” and will begin as a police reporter on a New York morning daily. A small jail at Ashville, Ohio,was burned and one prisoner, name unknown, burned to death. He had considerable money, and it is thought that he was murdered and the building set on fire to conceal the crime. Forest fires so threatened Fredericton on the evening of the 25th instant that, for the first time since the completion of the water- works, the engines were kept running all night, giving a water pressure of 100 lbs. The fires had nearly reached the city when a heavy rain commenced to fall and heavy showers fell during the night. The general committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science has elected Lord Raleigh President for 1884. Among the Vice-Presidents are the Marquis of Lorne, Marquis of Lansdowne, Sir John A. .Macdonald, Sir Charles Tupper, Sir Alexander Galt, Right Hon.
