More Accommopation Wantep—Only 15,000 more school children then there is school room for, is the. state of aflairs which now prevails in New York. The crowded conditions of modern cities make the proper teaching of children a diffi- cult matter, but there is little excuse for the scarcity of school accomodation in any part of the country, much less in New York. -_— <a Goop Reapine Coeap.—We have made arrangements (see advt.) whereby we are enabled to offer the Montreal Famity HERALD anD Weex.y Star in connection with Taz Weexty Examiner for a trial subscription of rwenty cents. TRIES THROUGH PATENT- ED REPORTED. (Communication from Messra Marion & Marion, Solicitors of patents and experts, New York Life Building, Montreal). Prior to Jaouary lst, 1891, patents (not inciuding 9,957 patents granted prior to 1836), were issued by the United States. These imcluded all patented inventions exhibited at the centennial ex- position at Philadelphia, an exposition of which the most strikirg and important feature was its display of the improve- ments in industrial ar: brought about by American invention, a display which was a revelation to all who visited that exposi- ion and was justly attributed to the stiroulus given to invention by the United States patent system. It was believed by many that the inventions there exhibited represented the highest development possi- ble, that there was no further room for improvement in any of the arts at least. Yet, the effect of this exposition was not, as might have been expected, to discourage invention or to convince inventors that nothing more remained to be done, that the field of invention was exhausted, but to largely stimulate invention. For three years after this exposition, the number of applications for patents received was less each year by fully one thousand than in 1876; but in 1880 the number was neariy five thousand more. In 1822 ten thous sand more than in 1876 were received. Last year the number received was, by six thousand, more than twice the number received in 1876, — ——_—__- 4a The big store carries tne principles of exclusiveness further than most stores in this city care to go. These occasions are characterized only by the best pieces, and actors dispute among themselves for the advantage of playing before this special public. No other audience is more grateful or more impressionable. They rarely have the pleasure of being present atthe play. Professor Mosso, the Italian physiolo- gist, constructed a couch so arranged that it could be accurately balanced in the middle when the slightest change of weight should make either end incline. A man was laid upon it, balanced in a horizontal position. As be went to sleep his head rose and his feet sank. As he awoke the opposite occurred, proving that the blood left the head in the one condition and returned to it in the other.
