DEAD HEAT BETWEEN HANLAN AND RILEY | IN THE PROFESSIONAL S!NGLE SCULL | RACE FOR $500 A SIDE. | Barrie, Aug 18.—The first day of | the Barrie Regatta of 1879,-has come that have marked it make it a red letter day in the history of aequaties. Kemperfieldt Bay presented an animated scene for sever | hours before the race, till the close of the days sports. The day throughout was remarkably fine, con- sidering how variable the weather has been of late. Inthe professional single scull race appeared Elliott, Gaudaur, Kennedy, Riley. Hosmer, Plaisted, Hanlan, Me- Ken, Berry, Jack Haalan and Puttulle who took ‘positions from shore in the order named. The course was four miles with a turn, and the prizes were: Ist prize $500, 2d prize $300, 3rd prize $150, 4th prize $100. The start was vood, Hanlan in a very few seconds becan to lead, having Plaisted with him und Riley close behind, with Kennedy third, and Elliott following, with Jack Hlanlan, who put in a heavy spurt and kept well up with his more distinguish- ed rivals. Asbort time only elapsed till the champion had a good lead, hav- ing spurted ahead of Piaisted. Ned now raade for the shore course, where the water was better, Riley managing to kecp a good place ashe had done all along. ‘The champion turned the buoy a litt!e in advance of Riley, who, it was plain to see was going to give him a tussle. Kennedy followed third in the turn, and the rest of the oarsmen were left almost unnoticed, so intense was the interest of the onlookers in the strugvle between the champion and the Boston oarsman. The pair did not seem to be putting in their best work though it was very evident they were by no means playing. Hanian was pulling 32 to 34; Riley 36; and_ the third man 33. At the mile buoy Han- lan led by perhaps by a couple boat lengths. Just here Riley began to spurt. Presently the space between the two grew less. Within a couple hun- dred yards of the winning buoy the champion wakened up somewhat and began to do better, but Riley settled down determinedly, and kept his po- sition. The excitement at this junc- ture was inteuse, and when the Judges’ gun announced the first place was taken people were at a loss to know who was the victor. The two scullers appeared to cross the line at the very same mo- ment, and the impression that they had done so was deepened when the second barrel of the gun was diseharged, fol- lowing, as the report did, so soon after the first, as it was possible to make it. It seemed as though it was intended to discharge both barrels simultaneously. No one of the spectators knew positive- ly which had won. The judges were divided in their opinion, and the refer- ree decided that it was a tie. Kennedy took next place. Elliott came in, fol- lowed by Plaisted and Gaudaur. Elli- ott, however, not having rowed over the course. Plaisted was third, but his claim to the position has been disputed by Gaudanr. To decide both this and the tic other races have been decided on. The fourth place will be again contest ed for, and Hanlan and Riley will, on Wednesday, be pitted against each other to setile which is the better man. The time made was 27.02, which is the fast- est ever made on this continent—one minute faster than atlast year’s regatta. The places by the other oarsmen in the race were of no special account, the ma- jority of them dropped out without tinishing. entbinncs Teetbniinaphiimn Lo Ask Yourself these Questions. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Srr—It is now two years since your ‘Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me te be ‘too good to ke true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. ‘The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertowu in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some fora cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littletield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. ville, Ont.
