Moratiry. illite THE PARK ROADWAY, Sir,—-The Guardian says that the daily press of Charlottetown is a “united press” touching the Park roadway and the nec- essity of its construction. No one qites- tiona the right, as well as the nécessity of the Park roadyay, but it is certainly news to the writer, who reade the two leading dailies of the city, and nas failed to see that they, at any rate, wrote a line favor- ing the high-handed act of the crowbar committee of the City Council, who went with their crowbars, axer, &c, to break duwn the fence in front of Governm ut House and thus take the matter in hand regardless of any higher authority than their own. Her Majesty’s representative very properly resisted the high-handed action of the City Council brigade, and warned them of the consequences should they dare to teuch the Government House fence. The step taken by His Honor the Lientenant Governor on this memorable occasion have been endorsed by Prémier Peters, the Attorney-General of this Proy- ince, byw fall bench of the judges’ of the Supreme Court, by Mayor Dawson, and by every reasonable citizen who adhercs ‘o the enforcement of law and order is a'l matters affecting the commonwealth. When, in the vear 1887, the Attorney- General—now Chief Justice of the Su- preme Court—introduced the Bill respect ing “an avenue to Victoria Park,” one cf tie provisions of which was that the lan § in question should revert and be inverteu as at present forthe use of the Govern- ment and Legislature of P. E. Island, pro viding thatthe construction of said road or highway be not commenced within eighteen months of the passing of ¢aid Act. This was a wise provision, knowi: g as everybody does know, that the action « f the tide was rapidly breaking up tle shore front, hence the neglecting of im mediate action, Time rolled on and the Act referred to becaine a dead letter. Dur- ing the winter last past, many a poor laborer, willing to work, could get no em- ployment. The condition-of the ‘labori* g classes wae known to all, but the woulu be patriotic City Council refused to move in the matter of msking provision for the laboring classes ut a time when their wants should be recognized and employ- ment given them.
