The political condition of British ‘Coiumbia is quite unsettled. Gover- nor Mclnnis got rid of the Turner !Govei~nment and called upon Mr. Semlin to form a new administration which he did. but was _able at first to command a majority of only one 'in the Legislature. Mr. Semlin is a Cmservative as are the_majority of his c»_-leagues, but his Attorney General, iMr. Martin, and some others are Liberals. The opp isition in the Legislature is made up of bith Libe- rals and Conservatives. The recent quarrel between Pre- mier Semlin and Attorney General ‘ Martin, resulting in the excusion of the latter from the cabinet is still unsettled. Martin charges that there has been _ a conspiracy toget rid of .the Liberal element in the cab’net and form an entirely Conservative Adminstration. p but this is denied by Semlin and his associates. who declare that they ha ve. |no such intention. The majority of W the Legislature are- Conservatives. But as the Premier has' been all along app irently in close accord with _Gov- ernor Mclnnis, who was appointed ' ~ _ " ,f ' by the Liberal Government at Ottawa it is not likely that there' has b-en _ ~ . ` ' _ ‘ an “Conservative l~.ii.” such as has Y _ P f been V _ ,' The Semlin Government had but a small majority in the House and might be in danger of defeatif Martin _ V me ' can cury wiih~ him ev/en`a"`few fol ' _ _ ' V _ loweis into ition. In any case.we are strongly of opinion that a two cent rate on our .Island road would, by the increase of ihe number of passengers, be found to psy as well as the present rate,so that the Gov- ernment might make the concession with little or no loss of revenue. Tun GUARDIAN regrets to learn of the hopeless condition of Hon. W. l-3. ,Ives. He was yet in the prime of life when stricken down suddenly, a man of excellent abilities and judg- ment, possessed of wealth and in fluence. He was the most prominent of Englishspeaking Conservatives in , Quebec. i This is Saint Swithin’s day, on which day if it rains tradition has if that rain will continue 'for forty days- The legend is that St-. Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, who died in the year E62, desired tobeburied, not in th: church but in the church fyard, that _ “the sweet rain of Heaven might fall t upon his grave.” At his canonization the monlrs thought to honor the saint by removing his body- within the church, and iixed the 15th of July for the ceremony, but it rained for 'forty days, so the monks saw that the saints were opposed to their project and wisely abandoned it. An old rhyme runs as follows : » St. Swiihink day, gil ve do tain For 'otty days it will r main; Si. Swithins diy. an ye be tair, For iorty days t’ ivill rain ode miir. Our railway is very crooked. giving a relatively very long mileage between any two points along the line. The road cost vary little per mile compared with the heavy cost of the Intercolonial. The accommodation: furnished to pas sengers is great y inferior to that of the Government road on the main- land.
