At least three men on the average jury are bound to disagree with the rest just to show that they have minds of their own; but there is no disagreement among the women as to the merits of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. They are all unanimous in pronouncing it the best remedy ia the world for all those chronic (liseases, weaknesses and complaints peculiar to their sex It transforms the pale, haggard, dispirited woman, inte one of sparkling health, and the ringing laugh again ‘‘reigns supreme” in the happy household. A wipow, named Annie Williams, hailing from Cardigan, has for some time past been employed at the Rankin House as a domestic. Annie was gentleness personified, and was nraen liked i in consequence. Yesterday after- noon she told her employer that she had re- ceived a letter fromthome, stating that her two children were ill with black diphtheria, and her presence was urgently required. Last evening she made ready to start, and removed her trunk to the house of afriend. Shortly after her departure, one ofthe chamber cirls missed a pumber of sheets. Search where she might the sheets could not be found. Sus- picion was at last cast in the direction of the gentle widow whose two children were “ying of black diphtheria ; but when search was commenced for her this morning it was discovered that she had left for home. She was, however, overhauled at Mount Stewart and taken prisoner. After her trunk had been searched, an a large collection of silver spoons, knives, forks, blacking, as well as some male attire, found therein, she was brought back to town. During the summer it was known that some person had been pilfer- ing small articles, but the thief could not be traced, The secret, however, is now out. The geutle widow will likely receive her reward on Monday. Silent Tue universal esteem in which Justin Me Carthy is held by his associates is well ex- pressed in the following editorial paragraph taken from a late English paper:-—‘‘Justin McCarthy was entertained at dinner in Lon- don last evening. Never was the love of comrades more honestly earned. If there was a secret plebiscite taken among the members of the Irish Parliamentary Party for the palm of popularity, Justin McCarthy is unquestion- ably the man who would unite the suffrages of most. His irresistible charm of manner, the gay and witty bohhomie, which makes him in society one of the most delightful of men; his transparent unselfishness; the cheer- fulness with which he has made, without a a word or sign, sacrifices at which other men would repine for a lifetime; his superb fidelity in hours of danger; and his grand and simple fearlessness; the eloquence which at times holds the House of Commons spellbound with admiration and amazement—all combine to endear Justin McCarthy to every man in the rty, from the leader to the rawest ensign. His comrades and countrymen will follow his footsteps in America with: affectionate interest; and it is perfectly certain that no cultivated section of the American people will be slow in their appreciation of one of the most brilliant of Irishmen and most charming of lecturers.
