Toxoid Week During the week of April 19-25, with the co-opcration of all Canadian health authorities and the Health League of Canada, a special ef- fort will be made to call to the attention of the Canadian people the fact that diphtheria may be eliminated from Canada altogether if parents will see to it that their children are immunized. Toxoid prevents diphtheria, and in some parts of Canada general knowledge of this fact has resulted in the total elimination of the disease from large communities. This is true, for ex- ample, in the City of Hamilton in which there has not been s death from diphtheria in ten years and not a case for eight years. In Canada, al- together during the last three years of record there have been 8,741 cases and 932 deaths -—all of them preventable. The Health League of Canada cells attention to the increased seriousness of the problem and lsks the cooperation of every citizen to spread the message to parents that toxoid is the ‘only sure way of safeguarding the lives of Canada's children against the ravages of diphtheria. The Wheat Problem From the standpoint of the wheat fsmter, the Government's wheat policy for the coming crop- ycsr represents s substantial improvement over that of the present crop-year, says the current Monthly Review of The Bank of Nova Scotie. On the basis of the advance in the initial price from 70c to 90c per bushel and of the increase in permitted deliveries from 223 million to 280 mil- lion bushels, the potential farm income from Prairie wheat during the coming crop-year is $205 millions When estimated federal payments under the Wheat Acreage Reduction Act and the Prairie Farm Assistance Act areadded in, the maximum possible income from wheat in I942- 43 WOtlld reach about $235 millions. This corn- pares with an estimated actual income in the pre- sent crop-year of $166 millions (of which some $60 lllilllfinfi is direct federal assistance), about S240 millions lll 1940-41, and an average of $166 millions iii the four years from 1936 to 1939. It should be noted, however, that this improvement is putcntiil rather than assured because though tho higher [irfrc is established, there can be no c(-i"i.i.:1i; iliu dvlivvrics will reach the permitted total.
