Music was furnished by the Souris Citizens Band. The tea tables were well patronized while the different booths and saloons were also kept quite busy. If the weather had not looked so unfavorable in the morning it is certain that there would have been an immensely greater crowd present.-* EASTERN PERSONALS ..*Mr. George Lone. representing Hawyards, St. John was in Souris yesterday on business.-* ..'Mr. E. STANDING GRAIN COMPETITION --The Department ot' Agriculture is again announcing Competitions in Fields of Standing Grain. Tlicre are other men who would prefer to join the ranks simply because they realize the enormous rc- sponsibllity oi' the wastage of life which results from the had leadership ol’ an improperly trained ofilccr. Some of these men hesitate to go in the ranks, merely 'because they are uncertain of finding the congenial companionship of men ol’ similar traili- ing mul tastes. Now, there is an organization ln Camida exactly suited to the require- ments oi’ such men, and its existence should be brought clearly to the no- tice ol’ cvery young man in Canaria. The Universities oi' Canada are working loyally together to raise com- pany siter company, and to send them overseas to reinforce as units that fa- mous regiment. the Princess Patricias Canadian Light infantry. Those companies are composed of men from the Universities of Canaria, the friends of such men, and broadly speaking. from men of that type. it must he clearly understood that ihev are not all University men. for there arc hank clerks. lawyers, archi- tecis. engineers, ranchers and others, and it has been found that such men pull well together and enjoy military llie to the full. li' the existence oi such a force was known throughout the length and breadth of Canada. there would be no difficulty in recruit- ing a full company within a week. The First University Company, un- der the command of an excellent lead- er, Captain Gregor Barclay. has heen to he the ilncst cr sailed from The Second company which has cv- Canada. University' Company was composed oi' mon of a splendid type and was cnibarkcd recently at Mrntri-nl. The Third Universities Company (and note that the plural is deliber- ate) is recruiting with fair rapidity and there is every hope that it will reach the high mark oi success at- tained by the first two companies. There is certainly no difficulty in, obtaining officers. but it is harder to ilnd picked men .for Sergeant-Major, Company Quartermaster-Sergeant,Pln- toon Sergeants and Section Leaders, on whom largely rests the success oil the Company. Indeed. Canada needs T T The -Eastern Guardian V T it clilciiy ii training school for non-com- mlssiulicd oillccrs. - The general principle is followed' of giving comniisslons to well qualified men from the University or from the district which furnishes the recruits. The West has certainly been a great recruiting ground for the Universities Companies, and thc men have proved themselves good soldiers. well dis- ciplined and efficient, with fine physi- que. it is hoped that the Maritime Provinces will rival the West in furnishing recruiting. Indeed, in the Si-cond Company men, doubtless furn- ishing recruits. Indeed, in the Second (lompauy men, doubtless Canadians, came to join from Oklahoma, Arizona, and Missouri.
