The Princess Louise took leave of Her Majesty at Osborne, August 12th, and left for Buckinham Palace on her way to Germany, where Her, Roval Highness is going for the benetit ef her health. A little girl named Laidlaw, while sitting in her father’s garden on Inglis street, Halifax, was attacked by a fox. An elderly sister came in response to ber cries for assistance, and killed the animal by striking it on the head witb an axe. The Canada Medical Associatioa has elected Dr. Caniff, of Toronto, presi dent. It will meet on the first Wed- nesday in August at Halitax next year. Dr. James Christie was elected vice- president, and Dr. P. R, Inches secre- tary for New Brunswick. The Germans are not disposed te allow the memory of Sedan to wax faint among them. Emperor William avails hiraself of himselt of the occa. sion to fire the German heart, as well as to give al! concerned abroad a hint that the German army is still to be relied upen as the steadiest guardian of the Fatherland. His proclamation refer- ring to Sedan dees not contain any ir- ritating references to France. The new syndicate for the publica- tion of the Toronto Globe is understood to have been completed. The prinei- pal shareholders are Mr. Nelson, of Ed- inburgh, Scotland, J. Gordon Brown, Hon. D. A. Smith, H. H. Cooke, M. P., Senator McMasters, Ald. It will continue to sup- port the Liberal party. Lord Chelmstord,in his defence in reference to the Isandula affair, failed, to justify himself fer not having put the Isandula camp ina cendition for defence before leaving. Had he felt for the onemy, as he ought .to have done, Isandula would not have been fought. Had he even laagered his sup- ply wagous, not to say threwn up re- trenchments, before marcbing for Isan- dula, the Zulu attack, if made, would have been repelled with great slaughter. He did neither. A good general, leav- ing nothing in such cireumstances to chance, would have done both. Lerd Chelmsford, though his orders may bave beea disregarded by Cols. Pul- leine and Durentord, can never wipe away the rebroach of Isandula.— News. The range of modern history furnish- es an account of no more brilliant and success{ul military campaign than that which culminated on 2nd September, 1870, in the defeat ef the French army and the capitulation of Napoleon the Third at Sedan. It is but natural that German people, who in that struggle became one vast army of seldiers and marched from victory to victery, should recall with national pride their splen- did achievements of ten yearsago. The cable despatches tell us they were cele- brating the anniversary of Sedan the other day in a quiet way and that the Emperor, now in his 84th year, on the oceasion issued a proclamation to the soldiers of the German &rmy, recalling their great deeds, expressing his pro- found thanks and warmest acknowledg- ments to them, coupled with the hope tbat they may continue to fulfil every call of duty and honor, maintain the strictest discipline and never relax in diligently training for war. These words ire not very assuring. as te the permanence of pacific relations except in the sense that preparation for war is sometimes the best security for peace. It is pretty clear, at least, that the time fer the disarmamert of Europe is not in the very near future. areiapbian -- Remedy for Hard Times.
