From ten o'clock yesterday morning till ten last night fully fifteen thousand people of all classes took their last view of Sir John as he lay in state in the Senate Chamber. The crowd outside was immense and several ladies fainted. _ This morning the public will be admitted till one o'clock. The floral offerings are very numerous. The whole line ef the procession to-day was heavily draped and all business was suspended. Every engine that has left the C. P. R. yard since Monday has been draped. The altar decorations of St. Alban’s Church are by the empioyes of the Depart- ment of the lnterior. _ Aspecial ;semorial service will be held in Westminster Abbey on Friday morning as a tribute tu Sir John’s memory. Sir John’s death is the subject of lengthy memorials in all London papers, and journals of the principal cities of the United Kingdom, and his life work is gen- erally eulogized as that of the first colonial statesman with worldwide reputation. Lonpox, June 10, The papers regard Sir Joho Thompsen as the most likely to be the successor of the Premier. The Governor-General wil! not send for any one to forma cabinet till Friday, after the return from the funeral. BRITISH PARLIAMENT, THE CRIMES ACT. EDUCATION IN IRELAND, Lonpon, June 10. Mr. Balfour in the House of Commons, replying to aquestion by Thomes Seaton, said that all clauses of the Crimes Act deal ing with boyeotting and intimidation can be withdrawn from the whole of Ireland, ex- cepting the county of Clare, and some of the baronies in which the plan of campaign still exists. The debate on the Government’s Educa- tion Bill being resumed, Mr. Balfour said Ireland's share of the budget would be ap- plied to freeing elemetary education in much the same way as in England. An early opportunity would be taken to deal completely with the problem of compulsory education. He had little hope that the Irish measure would be passed this season, but it had been introduced in order to en- able the membera to consider it during recess. The minimum grant for Ireland for this purpose would ps $900,000. —_———— 2» --—-—- Ascett Races.
