We do not agree with Mr. Shaw that it would be weli forthe Government to assist in the maintenance of the Hospital ; for this Pro. vivee should not be deprived of the credit of supporting its one institution of the kind by the free and un- assisted Christian charity of its people. But, we think, the Government might properly be asked to give a handsome grant, to aid in the erection of anew, a larger and a better hospital building. — We feel assured that the Government would be giad to respond to such a request; and we hepe they may yet have an opportunity of doing so. > + <i +o oO An Island Brigantine Wrecked. Tus Government steamer ‘‘Newtield” which returned to Halifax from Sabl Is and, Gi the 2nd inst., bronght the Captain and seven 0 the crew of the brigt. ‘* William of P. ; Island which was wrecked on the Islsnd. The Herald reports that the - a. Capt. Warren, left Barrow. G. B., on the on of December for Halifax, with a carge of 36 tons of railway iron, On the Ist of February being short ef provisions she bore up for Trepsssey, Nfl, and on the 2nd got paw in the ice off Cape Race in sizht wf lant The vessel remained in the ice for 26 days, and on the Sth of February the provision gave cut, there being nothing to eat but oats whieh were between the ship's timbers rend ‘ ° 3 | ization, | | remainder, with very lew exceplions, baving under the ceiling, and had been there for tw years and consequently were in a musty apd decayed state. Fresh water was procured from pools of rain water and snow on the ie The oats were prepared for esting by being | parched and then ground between two stones On this meager diet the men subsisted for | twenty-two days, but became sick, their bedies and Iimbs swelling to an enormous 812°. The vessel's stem and cutwater was car!ied away by the ic», and she began to leak con: | siderably. Owing to their exhausted con dition the crew were uvable to work the ship if they had met heavy weather, and the boats were got ready; in case the ice broke the ship up. The ve-sel got clear of the ice and bore up for sable Island, this being the neacest point wh re assistance could be obtained. She anchored on the Ist of March, on the south side of the island in seven fathoms of water. ‘The crew were too weak to furl the sails and immedi ately landed on the island. Some were se exhausted that they had to be carried ashore. where “every attention and kindness was shown them, and they soon recovered. The following day the wind came off from the South East and the vessel! could not be board. ed, and on the 4th the wind had increased tu a gale frem the same quarter which broke the vessel’s moorings driving her ashore, wher= she became a total wreck. Captain Warne and crew speak in the highest terms of the kindness anc care they received whiie on the Island. The ** William” was a vessel of 266 tons register, built at P. IscorRiGIBLE.—Some people seem to grow more stupid with age. There are born blockheads as well es born poets. The editor of the Summerside Journal seems to be one of the former. There fis not a newspaper reader on the Island who does not know that the editor of the Journal is quite incap- able of writing a grammatical paragreph.
