CIAU considers drug testing for university atheletes OTTAWA (CUP) — Canada’s sports authority is consider- top university ing a nation-wide program of random drug tests for uni- versity football players. Under instruction from Sport Canada, the Cana- (Gian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CLIAU) set up an ad- hoc committee recently that must decide by June whether a program is necessary. The tests would look for abuse of “performance enhancing drugs’’, such as steroids, by . football players. ‘The commit- tee must first find out the ex- tent of drug use among uni- versity athletes before decid- ing to go ahead with a testing program, according to Bob Pugh, CIAU executive vice- president and head of the committee. But Keith Harris, ath- letic director at Carleton University and a committee member, said testing up to MBA at Memorial The Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland offers the Master of Business Administration degree on a part-time and full-time basis. Applications are now being accepted for part-time studies beginning either In May or September 1988, and for full-time studies in September 1988. Besides business/management, the Faculty welcomes applications from graduates of programs in nursing, engineering, the social and physical sclences, and the humanities and arts. We offer small classes, an applied orientation, newly- expanded building and microcomputer lab, internationally-trained faculty, possibly a term at our Harlow campus in England, and more. The total tuition fee for the MBA degree is $2,154. 7,000 players at $250 per test may be prohibitive. And he _added that the tests may not be reliable. “Some days a guy may be good (negative) and other days he could be bad (positive) depending on when he last used a drug,” he said. The CIAU has not de- cided how it would ‘punish players that tested positive if they implemented the tests. He said punishing an en- tire team because one player tests positive might “put some teeth” into a program. Carleton football coach Ace Powell said though drug abuse by athletes is far less common in Canada than in the US, testing may be nec- essary for football players as soon as they start university: _ “Some of these students out of high school would rather use the drugs than build up naturally,” he said. “JT think testing is the ulti mate education for the play- ers.” The way to learn French?
