Credit llnion League Meeting The following report by the man- aging director Mr. J. G. Dennis was given at the annual meeting on July 10 oi the P. E. I. Credit Union League Limited. In presenting this report. I. would Iirst like to thank your board of directors. the directors and offic- ers of the credit unions, the Ex- _ tension Department of St. Dun- stan! University and, especially Rev. M. E. Francis and my co- makers for the support, advice and ilelpiulness in this my first year BS your Managing Director. I be- lieve that in no other organiza- tions except the co-operatives could you [ind a class of leaders and workers who are so willing to help one another. The fiscal year from July 1, i946 to May 31. 1947 has been one of the busiest years your league has ever had. Credit Union business has become big business; your oi‘- iire at 202 Queen Street has be- come a center oi information. coun- lel and organization. I would call to your attention some oi the high lights of the year just concluded. amendments to the By-Laws of the share and Loan Department and iinui passing oi same. l Attendance at Taxation Confer- lenr-e in Quebec City in September. speakers supplied to Credit Un- ion Annual Meetings in October Enzriwement oi Mr. A. Attendance at short courses at Alberton and St. Georges; attempt- ed attendance at other shozl UOUFSBS. Negotiations in connection with the shipment oi potatoes to Bril- am. I Over t\venl._v-i‘ive hundred loans made to members oi credit un- Earls. Organization There were no credit unions organized during the past year HOWEVEI’ plans are help;- laid 1;; hring the credit union movement to the attention o! a qreater num- ber oi people in Charlottetovm, where there is a large potential membership. Organizational work has already been carried on in one district where we hope that a new credit union will be charter- ed within the next month. lt is lo be regretted. however, that we shall be obliged to close out one credit union shortly because oi its i inactivity. - l Membership Increase 1 According to the Annual Report ‘of Credit Unions for the year end- ing September 3i). i946. new mem- ' hers added during the year hum-f bored i414; the number with- drawn during the year amounted to 630 leaving a net increase in membership of ‘r64. j The number shown on the re- port as having withdrawn is very Imuch higher than other years due ‘to several credit unions having lcxililled out their inactive member- s p. Our membership drive this year gave us better results in the num- her oi new members obtained. Thirty-nine credit unions answer- ed our inquiries on the results of ‘the drive whereas only twenty- lone credit unions answered inquir- ies the previous year. I l believe this drive could easily have been increased by another liour or five hundred members if we and the officers oi the credit unions had really done a job on it. Half oi the thirty-nine credit un- ions reporting did not get ove iour new members.
