By Jim McGrath For those of you out there who aren’t that in- volved in the production of ‘The Gem’, there was an Atlantic Region Cana- dian University Press {.47'- CUP) conference in Halifax this past week-end. CUP is a non-profit organization linking over fifty students papers across Canada. As a member of CUP, our fees pay for a news & features exchange, and a source of ‘national advertising. This ference was jointly hosted by 5t- Mary’s ‘Jour- nal’, and _ the ‘Gazette’. Gem stiit mem- bers to attend the AR- CUP conference were my- self, Danny Mullen, and Su- san Arbing. Cther univer- sity papers to attend were ‘the Picaro’ of Mount Saint con- i "reusie gre EXP ELA RAT Anyone can contribute to The GEM: an- nouncements, short stories, poems, letters, or * just’plain ideas can be dropped off at the Barn, sent through VAX MAIL to GEM, or stuck on our door down in the basement of the utility . building. * Vincent, ‘the Athenaeum’ of Acadia, ‘the Baron’ (for- mally Tucker Yark Press) of UNB in Saint Joh», ‘the Xaverian’ of 5i. One interesting one was with Tony Sheed of a new Cana- dian magazine called ‘the Ho taiked New Magauziyc’: about the magy is totally unbisscsi L485 no ads at all. Another dele- gate attending was very up- set that Mr. Sheed would not reveal the financers of the paper, as there were rumors that it was funded by a neo-naxi son of a Japanese millionaire. Mr. Sheed stated that these ru- mors were totally untrue We cherish typed and double spaced sub- , missions and submissions on computer disk or through VAX mail. For legal reasons, all submis- sions must include the author’s name and phone : number. However, names will be withheld from publication on request. > and that their indentity was - confidential, but the mag- azine did accept donations from people and was fi- nanced partly though loans from those who ran and worked for the publication. Another thought the man was an SIU agent from the Canadian military. At the opening semi- nar on Saturday morning, we discussed what CUP re- ally is, and what we get from our membership in it when we pay our fees to the national office in Ottawa. We have the right to deter- mine and uphold our edito- rial policy, including adver- tising, regardless of pres- sure from students govern- ments and administrations.
