CHOCOLATE ' KISSES These are something new and are _ 73 THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. A correspondent inquires as to the original form, and the authorship of the .\'at-ional Anthem. A number of 11ews~ papers have within the past few days had their attention directed to the same matter. The Anthem was long popularly known in approximately the form in which we shall hereafter sing it, and was known commonly as God Save the King. Henry Carey, an illegitimate son of the Marquis of Halifax, born near the end of the 17th century, and who died in London in 1743, probably by his own hand, is tha reputed author of both the words and music. He was a versatile ballad writer and some of his songs have come down to cur time. But Carey did not claim to have been the original author and something very strongly resembling it, and out of which the Anthem was no doubt evolved was in in existence long before Carey's day. A writer in the St. John Globe points out that the words of a Jacobite hymn, which ,must have been written before the death ,of James II in 1701 are in part as follows: “God Save the King, I pray, God bless the King I pray, God Save the King. All of -which goes to :show that the National Anthem, like the British constitution has been the result ofa long evolution from agerm which possessed great vitalit y. The music of the national song seems to have interwoven itself with the very libre of the Anglo-Saxon race. This is shown by the fact that it is known and sung wherever the English language is spoken. Our American cousins know it as “America,” and have adapted to it other noble words than those with which we are so familiar. To them the stirring strain has become as familiar as to us, while the to the country rather than to its ruler. We can join heartily with them in every line of their noble song. We, too, “love the rocks and rills, the woods and templed hills” of our own country and can join with them in the prayer- Long may our land be bright With freed0m’s holy 1ight;- Protect us by thy might _ , Great God our King. Let us hope that§the two grcat nations, so closely related in blood and tradition, and heartily singing the same national music may be brought ever into closer harmony and accord. | ____ _A _ Though the Queen reigned so long there are some persons living at a great age who can remembel having lived under ave British reignsl George 111 died in 181), and Senator Ylifark, still living, was then a youth of `6 years.
