friend. the liev. E. St. Jean, ot Rock
Poster, he had ,spent his summer’s
h0Ul1\1Y “Biting Berlin, Munich,” Dre-
sden and other cities. Mr. Hebert,
gives the following interesting
count ol what he saw ol Germany
der martial law:
"At Verviers we lived for six week
ill!-

\vitl\ the Germans occupying the
town. The Germans, to our amaze-
ment. did no damage to the town, and
*iid Yllmllllg that could be called out-
rageous. They commandeered horse
and motor cars. but did not interfer

with the inhabitants. except to issue
terrible proclamation to them. These
proc-lamations. which were posted up
on the walls, stated that anyon
found doing this or that would ii

shot, ami anyone caught doing sonic-
thing would be hanged. Moreover,
the Germans took possession of live
leading citizens and held them in hos-
tage for the good behavior oi the
in-
habitants. These iive were to be in-
stantly shot it there was any interfer-
ence with the soldiers. Two ot the
live hostages were priests, and it was
permitted for their places to he per-
iodically taken by two other priests,
and so there was a constant change
oi hostage going on, all the priests
taking their turn.
There was no work going on in
the
town. A committee oi’ the principal
citizens was formed, and they iss ed

paper money to the amount oi' 20,00
francs for distribution among th

poor who, oi course, suffered terribly

from the lack of employment. W

“MUST OBEY ORDERS."
“Mr. St. Jean. who can speak Ger-
man. spoke to some of the German
soldiers. 'l‘hey said that they had n
wish to be cruel, that they had t

obey orders, and that if they did not
kill the Frenciiinen the Frenchmen
would kill them. When exhorted b

wanton cruelty. they promised the

would do so. The Germans paid for
all the food they took and generally
beliaved.. well. As we had heard ter-
rible s‘torics of German barbarities,
we marvelleii at this; but explanation

“At length we found it possible to
leave Verviers. not by train, for the
railway was in the hands ot the Ger-
mans, but by motor car. It was with
the greatest trouble that we managed
to hire a motor car, (or the owner
was'a.traid that as soon as it was seen
it would be seized. But by dint oi’
paying a heavy price we persuaded
the man to drive us away.
GHASTLY WAR SIGHTS. '
"On our way we saw ghastly evi-
dences oi! what the Germans mean _ by
war. We passed through the vilages
of Battlce. Herve and Vise. In Herve
there were 300 houses destroyed. Al
Battice and.Vise everything had been
destroyed, nad there were tell--tale
mounds which spoke of the dead. lt
was at Vlse that practically the first
battle between the Belgians and Ger-
mans took place. The Germans tried
to force their way over the Meuse,
where the Belgians had blown up the
bridge. Half ot the town was destroy-
ed in the iight. and afterwards the
Germans, when they crossed the riv-
er. destroyed the rest oi! it. As we
passed on from these villages we ev-
erywhere saw crowds tleeing to I-Iol-
land or to London.
“The people to whom we spoke told
us oi' horrible barbarities committed
by the Germans. Some of these stori-
es told me were almost unbelievable,
and certainly uurepeatabla I was
told by a priestv that at Herve the
Germans shot 40 innocent men, be-
cause it was said that the troops had
been fired on. At another village half
a dozen priests were made to stand
in a row, and one was told to kneel
down, and was immediately shot. in
ordor to terrorize the inhabitants. The
whole experience was terrible and un-
forgettable, and was altogether in-
congruous when one was holiday
making. However, we are really none
the worse for our travels, except that
our baggage is in Paris, and I don't
know whether we shall see it again.
We sent it to Paris from Brussels, as
we meant to go home that way.”

in connection with an alleged cot-
ton corner. lie left an estate valu-
ed at $20,000,000.
