HIS Eminence Cardinal Gibbons preach. ed in_ St. Dunstaut’s Cathedral Sunday morning. The building was packed to the doors with an expectant congregation. The Cardinal spoke for upwards of half an hour. His sermon was one of the most impressive that has been heard with- in the Cathedral walls, and truly Catho- lic too. He referred to his visit to the Island and the hospitality of the people in the highest terms and regretted that he could not stop longer. At the request of the bishop he made a. few remarks in reference to erecting a new Cathedral and hoped to have an excuse for return- ing to the Island either at the laying of the corner stone or the consecration. The sermon was not what could be called a great intellectual effort, but it was eminently‘ Christian. In fact I have never in all my life heard a sermon which contained more of the pure Chrietran spirit. “The object of Christianity was the moral improvement of man. It did not consider a man's nationality or social position, it did not considersman'spaouliarreligion-whether he was a Protestant or Catholic; itconcern- ed itself with a man’s_manh -cd and how to improve it"——and much more of such a- kind did he say: Now if the R1338!) One reason why Christianity has been so divided has been the arbitrary, insulting exclusiveness and unbending sutocrasy of the church. Of course certain doctrines held by the church have been a hindrance to unity, ‘but not nearly so much as has been suppnsrd. We are coming more andmore to attach small importance to dogmas. We now know that man's general training while young influences very materially then acceptance of certain kinds of dcg- mas. Men now a-days are becoming more and more inclined to allow every individual man to accept whatever dog mas he pleases, and unite on some grand general platform such as Cardinal Gibbons laid down. The Cardinal con- “Purs religion and undefiled before God and the father is t:his—-to visit the fatherless and widows in their aflliction, and to keep himselg unspotted from the world.""Success to Cardinal Gibbons, long may he live to promulgate snub doctrines as he preached today. . Aug. 7. A Paomsrsur. Letter from Rev. J. A- fiordon. SIR,--I notice by this morning’s GUAI. nrsfthat answers elicited from me by you in a. recent interview, has led Rev. A. E. Burke to the conclusion that his motives for interesting himself in and in- terfering with the crofters’ troublekiwere impr-'-ac-hed. I cannot understand how any such inference could be deduced. I certainly didn’t intend any such thing. Onthe contrary Ivery emphatically assert an opposite view; not cgn I easily see how . the rev. gentleman comes to any such con» clusion. ’ Under the circumstance, however, there is room for a difference of opinion as to the wisdom of the ciurse pursued in this matter by Rev. Burke. Were these cruftershsve their-pwnclorgymen and rep- representativesi parliament, men whw are deeply iuteréted in their welfare, intelligent men who understand the de- tails involved in the question, and whose business it is to defend the interests and seek redress for these peopQ, whether it is wise or otherwise for a stranger to take such matters in lhand, is a question on which all might not agree. i The gngwer thpt I have given to your question as to my own opinion’ of the probable result of; theaction above referred to, I still adhere to and as to whether this opinion is based upon ignorance or knowledge of th ‘main question at issue, the bearing and grape of the laws regulst. ing Homestesdiitg as well as other facial and principles inyolved in the case, I am quite satisfied toslonve to time to dcmot. strata. . Snt,3-It is to be hoped that f‘the fuss” made over the removal of the old house formerly the R.’ 0. city hospital through the streets in mid-summer will prevent the City Council in the future from allow ing old houses toibe moved through the streets of the city. Old houses, when owners think it to their interest to sell them by auction, should be pulled down on the spot by the purchaser. It is intol- erable that because a man thinks he can make-a few -dollars by purchasing an old house he should be allowed the free use of the streets ti the city for its removal to the great inconvenience of citizens, in- juring the streets and the few trees we have, and obstruction to traffic. As a pretty large tax payer I only voice the opinions of-‘ citizens by saying that it should not be ‘allowed.
