But notwithstanding al] the writhings and contortious of the several editors of that journal, the fact every day becomes more manifest that the Crown Lands Department has been made, under, the present administration, a very ceaspoo) of corruption, It has been clearly proved, by a state- ment wrung from the reluctant hand of the present Commissioner, that the greatest favoriteism and most unwarrantable con- cessions have been made tojthe friends of the party now in power, and that besides the amount received for searches, the en- ormous sum of $4,41455 has not been accounted for, notwithstanding the oft- repeated demand for information on this question. If Mr. Peters harbors the idea that the people should not demand the fullest investigation into this matter, he has mistaken the temper of the intelligent electorate of this Province. If he vainly imagines that he can complacently repose amid the indignation which exists on every hand, and deny the most rigid enquiry and the fullest information in this affair, he! may receive at the hands of an outraged people such a rude awakening as will form an epoch in his life. We know that over $9000 has almost entire- ly gone into the pockets of the friends of the government by way of discounts of the most unwarrantable and unjustifiable nature. But into whose pockets has this sum of over $4500 gone ? is the important question. This is a matter that concerns the public and should be of vital interest to Mr. McMillan. If he has allowed himself to be madea willing tooi in the designing hands of Premier Peters, if he has so far forgotten the important duties as the head of his department as to suffer himself to be like the clay in the hands of the potter, the public will hold him responsible. He has accepted a trust. He has become the trustee and custodian of the Public Lands of this Province. It is a duty he owes not only to himself but also to the public that the shortage of over $4500 in his department be accounted for. Nothing short ef a commission to rigidly investigate the present state of affaira in the Land Office will satisfy the peopie, and no person should be more auxious than Mr, Me Millav to have his conduct vindicated while he is in a position to answer for himself before & properly constituted tribunal. ONE OF TH: PEOPLE. June 29, 1892, —_— EE A Pointer. Srz,—1 would like to call the attention of the Commissioner of Public Works to a new system of road making that is going on jast now in this district. The new plan con- sists of laying a large tier of stone on each side a width of about eight feet, then filling in the middie with clay and stone, making it impossible for carriages to pass, and if a cart should go over it itis sure to break the axle or do some other damage. As for the private coutracts which the supervisor is giving to special friends, io le do not grumble if they make a good job of them as nothing better is expected just now. I would advise the Commissioner, if possible, to get the Minister of Public Works of Canada to come and take one lovk at this particular piece of enginuity in road making, and so doubt it will serve them through after life. This peice of road is situated on the Sturgeon Line Road, east end. By giving the above space in your paper you will oblige Aw Op LIBERAL. Milltown, Lot 61, Jnne 27, 1892. Ferry Boat Time Table.
