At a time when the people of this Province are loyally and generously supporting every one of the many war funds, it is not journalism of,a high character which seeks to belittle the .efforts of and administration of any of these funds. ' ' We doubt if a better selection of men could be made than those on the Executive of th¢~‘.Pro'1/incial Patriotic Society. Nor do we think that there 'are many obtainable who would give the time and labor these men do. - _ , There is no thought of “shame” on the part of the workers on this Executive, rather a feeling of pride oil the work acconiplislied as well in collection, as in administration. The shame is that a public journal should in malice print a .ruggestiou that private individual: “got any- thing out of it.” The shame of the thing is that such untruths should appear seeking to bring into contempt those whom we have rightly “delighted to honor," and who deservedly are held in the highest respect and es- teem by the whole community. . The animosity of the Editor of the Patriot towards the President of the Provincial Patriotic Society is apparent; indeed, the article is largely a cover to_e_x_- press it. Possibly when the work of the Rev. Dr. Ful- lerton is known as well by the public as it is by the Executive with whom he has labored, this will be the more clearly apparent, though there are few_ w_ho.do not know _of his many journeyings and addresses in every part of the Islaild, in weather at times trying to any nlali. ` But enough of this. Good men’s characters are not injured by such writing; it is only that _their in- fluence might (not) be impaired, and their desire for public service hindred, that we write at all. _ The Italics are ours; the rest is the Pata'iot’s. The following correspondence speaks for itself: CHARLOTTETOWN GUARDIAN." Cllarlottetown, _july 5th, I9l5. Capt. T. Edgar McNutt, Holi. Secretary, The P. E. I. Patriotic Society Bank of Commerce Building, Charlottetown. _ Dear Capt. McNutt,-Hercwith I enclose bank book in connection with bank account which I have opened in the name of the P. E. I. Patriotic Society in the Canadian Bank of Commerce. You will find the amount credited is $552.87; this money was rais- ed (a) by subscriptions contributed by readers of the Guardian (b) from the proceeds of sales of Flag Badges given by the Guardiali. As I intimated ver- bally at the last meeting of the committee of the so- ciety, the objects for which the fund was raised are as follows: I ' First, to supply temporary monetary relief to Is- land recruits and their friends on enlisting. Second, to send aid to the Prince Edward Island`ward _iii the Base Hospital, Le Touquet, France, which hadbeen asked for by Captain Walker, and third, to' assistin sending a Military Band to different parts of the coun- try where patriotic meetings are to be heldL` " ` I have already suggested, and the clilil‘lliiitf'el§"'con-' curred in the suggestion, that before any financial as- sistance be 'sent to Le Touquet'Hospita_l the 'Medical Superintendent of the hospital should be *communi- .cated with to find out the nature and extent ofthe financial assistance desired. ' " ' your committee are arranging for meetings that I should be communicated with, as there are certain districts which have contributed liberally to the fund and which I think so far as possible should have an opportunity of hearing the appeals and listening to the band. I have arranged with the bank that the Rev. Dr. Fullerton, President, and Dr. Goodwill, Honf Treasurer, jointly shall be authorized to draw cheques, and the Manager, Mr. Harrison, has asked that a formal resolution to this effect be adopted by the com- mittee at_its first meeting and an excerpt from the minute containing same forwarded to him.
