German cruiser Emdeu. when the Em-
ilen was fleeing from Penang after
having sunk the Russian cruiser Jemi-
chug, October 28. appear in the Straits
Settlement Times.
Lieutenant Carissau. the second in
command of the Mosquet. \vho now
lies in ii grave at Sabaug. told the
story of the fight just before his death.
When those ou the Mosouet heard
the cannonndc at Penang they steam-

a pup endeavoring to flglit a bull ter-
rier, but nevertheless. they headed
straight for their enemy In thc hope

MAN CONFESSED
NORTH SYDNEY, Jan. I1.-West,
the colored man has confessed to the
murder of Cassie Dunn. The state-
ment was made to Stipendiary Forbes

of Police McKinnon. The motive, as
has been suspected for several days,
was crlmliial assault.
The murder was coniinitted-between
five and six o'clock on the evening of
Dec. 21st, and was discovered shortly
after by Adams Ross. who boarded

bottom of the cellar stairs.
For the past few days. especially
since the arrest of Connolly, the sus-
picion hail been growing stronger
that West was the murderer. and on
Wednesday night. Officer Bryant took

over the scene of the crime with him.
