The UPEI SUN, Thursday, November 13.1980.page ‘0 by Mickey Place Well two wins out of six games MAY be an inprovanent over recent efforts, but a .333 average is deemed good only as a batting average in baseball. This past weekend, we lost two in hockey, (They were league games too). At the Knock- out Tip Off Tournament we split a pair in both Pantherette and Panther action. The Pantherettes started things off well by gaining a very satis- fying win over the girls from St. F.X. (who are in the league rated superior to ours) 80—64, as sharp- shooting Cathy Chandler Two out of six ain't bad netted 29 points and Dam Macleod 18. Our girls led from the start and the X—ettes were never in contention. Alas, homver, in the final game against the Acadia ladies, we bowed out 57—46 in a contest that was reasonably close until the final minutes when the more experienced Acadia girls drew away. Velvet Charters, a new- comer from Sussex, N.B. , led our scorers with 20. The girls make their first home appearance of the season on Friday ' at 6:00 P.M. when they'll play hostess to the St. F.X. girls in their" last exhi- bition game before their league«start. While on the distaff side of ath- letics, we'd like to offer sincere congratu- lations to Barbara Mullally who, this week, received an Honours Award from the Atlantic Provinces Physical Education Society recog- nizing her record of par- ticipation in her field. a 15—0 record as they . swept all opposition aside on their way to Maritime Intercollegiate Intemediate Title. ‘We do not think any other UPEI team has come close to this record. ‘ In Panther Basketball, our boys started off very well I lock-Km our 10119,, goal Norman Beck "wl'n tipped in a Brian O'Stroski slap shot in the closing minute ofthesecondperiod. We were really clobbered in the final as Acadia took an early lead and never let up as they won, going away, 109-68. Dave Nutbrown was not al all discouraged by the defeat noting that his inexperienced team (all but two are new players) never stopped trying and are inproving with every game. Mike McLaughlin again led us with 15, Bill Redmond .had 12 and Vinnie Dipinto 11. ' In Hockey, we opened our league season at Dalhousie and the game was much closer than ' the 6-1 defeat would indicate, as we trailed by only 2—1 after the second, nainly because of a good performance. by goalie Jamie Cudnore. The third period, however, 'belonged to Dalhousie and they outshot us by wide nargin, as they scored four unanswered goals. Dcrmie Morrison, rotund raconteur of the Guardian, points out that it was, in part, an Island victory as four of the Dalhousie squad Mad)onald, had four assists in a brilliant game. expectorating ("Spit" is a horrid word) on an opponene This certainly camot be deemed as a defensive treasure, but it certainly is offensive. We cannot see nuch value in it either, it does not help to score a goal and it does not deter an opponent. Inasmuch as most of the players Chen bubble gum, we can't under- stand its use. Now in the faroff days of our youth many athletes chewed tobacco and a squirt of Hickey's mist might be a real deterrant, but sweet smelling saliva from bubble gum??? Besides what would Emily Post say?? Penalties played a large part in the result of this game as Dal scored three goals on power plays as our boys sat out for 37 of the 63 minutes inposed. Next day, at Woilfville, we led 5-4 with less than 5 minutes to go, but Acadia came back with three unanswered scores in the closing stages to win 7-5. Scoring for us were Callie MacPhail, Mike Ready and Norman Beck while hard working Gary Trainor had a pair. Our league record is now 0-2 as we head into this weekend which will feature St. F.X. Saturday at 2:00 P.M. and Saint Mary's (3-0) on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. Wouldn't it be fun to see us lose a couple of fights and win a pair of games.” — ' We are pleased to note, from a perusal of V the colurms of the McGill Daily that Michael Roche is now an active reporter for their sports department.
