thousand, on the Meuse near the
French frontier, where the first scri-
_ous encounter between German and
,French armies took place. As soon
as the French retreated, these Ger-
man rascals set fire to the town be-
cause thc French soldiers had llred
from some houses. There remains
now exactly 22 houses unburned, 539
civilians; women and children have
been murdcrfed most shamefully. and
the whole population have fled in pa-
nic. Exactly the same fearful fate
came to the town of Andeme, (29,000)
and Vise (12,000). Larger towns,
Aerschot, Louvain, Malines, 'Fermonde
have been bombarded without mili-
tary necessity and then pillaged axld
burned down.
But I think you have read of these
atrocities in the English and Ameri-
can papers and you may take their
accounts as true and not at all ex-
aggerated. News from France is bet-
ter and we hope to have that scourge
out of our little country sooner than
was expected, but that will require a
great deal of hard lighting in Belgium
and again great damage to our poor
countrymen.
Our prospects for the future, after
the peace, may be bright. and \ve rely
on our good friends of England and
France for that, but our present needs
are beyond our resources and we must
count on thc generous help of our
Canadian friends, for which I send
you again our grateful thanks.
We are all in such a. state of per-
manent anxiety that we can hardly
think of business. Mr. Prud’homme
wrote me that everything is satisfac-
tory in Stellarton and we have only
to wait for improvements of the
markets.
'I‘he Germans are so busy in France
that we may hope not to see them
hcrc on this little corner of Belgium
near the seaside; but it may still be
long before we shall be able to return
to Brussels with ladies and children,
so that you may write to my present
address: 93 Digue street, Ostend, for
a few weeks longer. It takes now
from 8 to 12 hours for the 80-miles
journey from Ostend to Brussels,
changing trains three or four times
and making seven miles in country
carts or even walking. In Brussels,
German soldiers are behaving as well
as one could expect after what has
been done elsewhere, but this is main-
ly due to the presence of the Ameri-
can Ambassador and of many resi-
