Mr. Mackenzie King. Premier Lea’s Campaign As the Conservative candidates pointed out at. the Cape Traverse meeting, Premier Lea's contemptible insinuations against the motives oi’ lawyers in engaging in politics-in- sinuations aimed obviously at the Opposition candidate, Mr. Strong, and the Conservative leader, Hon. J-D. Stewart-react very unfavorably upon his own lawyer candidates. It was Premier Lea who forced Mr. Ihane Campbell upon the Liberal nominating convention in Second Prince in the lay-election campaign last year and in ihe present cam- paign he was instrumental in oust- ing Mr. Darby, the Liberal farmer representative oi Third Prince. in order to make way for another young lawyer from Charlottetown. The only object in the Premier's persistent sneering references to lawyer candidates i5 to appeal to class prejudice. Touted as the “far- mer Premier," he is playing up to the role in a manner which disgusts every intelligent farmer who listens jo him. Mr. Lea had the opportunity, Phe was forming his Cabinet. to show his opinion of farmers. He first class farmer in the person of Mr. Shelton Sharp. and Mr. Lea has been anything but compliment- ary in his comments about the elect- ors’ decision on that memorable oc- casion, Election Promises 1i federal politics were in issue, the Conservative candidates would certainly have no difficulty in showing that Premier Bennett has implemented more oi his promises in the time he has been in power than any Premier in the Dominion of Canada. None but a. disgruntled Liberal remnant whose political as- pirations have been defeated would attempt ‘to deny this mt. 1t is only necessary to cite, among other things undertaken by the Bennett Government directly in line with its election platform. the special session called to relieve un- employment and the voting oi $20,- 000,000 ior that purpose; the re- vision of the tariff for the protec- tion of Canadian agriculture and industry; the grants to technical and agricultural education; the in- crease by 50 per cent in the ap- propriation for old age’ pensions un- til such time as full federal pay- ment can be assumed; the formu- lation oi a national fuel policy, most comprehensive scheme oi its kind ever launched in this country; the securing of greater markets for wheat; the appropriation to aid in did so by ignoring them. When Mr. Butler, the farmer member without portfolio, left the Government in disgust his place was taken by a merchant from Mount Stewart, whose record as a dcbater during an viihole term in the lbegislature the transportation of wheat amounting to more than $10,000,- 000; the enlargement and applica- tion of the anti-dumping provisions oi the Customs Act; and the nego- tiation oi a new treaty with Aus- tralia under which Canadian agri- ing and come from a. deluded public. This is practically the way in which the promoters oi a. gigantic under- taking proceeded. where at least fifty millions were lost recently. It is not with capital in general that we must quarrel, but with similar abuses, committed by people. who have the impudence to call them- selves capitalists and financiers, when they should be called some- thing. very different indeed. Their conduct is in great measure respon- sible for the present economic crisis From the evidence so for adueed in the investigation into the Beau- harnois activities it would appear to the ordinary layman that the peni- tentiaries oi this country should reap a. full harvest‘ and that the sooner it is garnered the better it will be ior Canada- In obtaining the velocity in the line oi sight of 523 of the hottest and most massive stars in the sky, 2,679 spectra were made with the 72-inch telescope at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory of the Department o1 the Interior st Vic- toria, B.C., requiring the time oi an observer at night for over 2,000 hours. In the measurement of these spectra by means oi s. measuring microscope the spectral lines were brought into coincidence with the spider thread in the ‘microscope-v-an operation requiring great care and accuracy-ct least 250,000 times. After the spectra. were measured these measurements had to be transformed into velocities requir- ing about half as much time again and finally all the velocities discus- sed, an operation still in process. Consequently it does not seem sur- prising to learn that this one piece oi work has occupied practically the entire time oi two astronomers for over six years. The lesson of the past ten years is that financial concessions to Ger- many invariably have been iollow- ed by increased German determin- ation to evade the terms of the peace treaties, and to circumvent (one sided headach ) acute ail- ments, and dropsy. Another point he emphasizes is that as the diet is reduced, there should be as much variety to it as possible, so that the individual — usually a big eater-should not feel that he is being harshly treated, and perhaps not obey orders strictly. The thought then is that a shwt fast is excellent in most acute ail- ments where there is increased pulse and temperature; that it is good in overweigit and other conditions mentioned above. It is not however advisable in low blood pressure, nor in those chronic exhaustive states, where fresh air, plenty of sleep and abundant food, is really the treatment. Let me think oi that hemlock tree Beside the Indian Lake ' High in the windy hills, Dark, wide-branching and fragrant, Cool by the jade-silver water, Remembering irost and snow And crystal silence oi Winter. It is my tree, my cwn.
