Communication Dis- rupted. A 42 mile an hour gale accom- panied by rain and hall swept across Prince Edward Island yes- terday afternoon, uprooting trees and disturbing communication sys- tems. The wind attained its great- est velocity between three and four oclock in the afternoon. Trees and telephone poles were reported broken and tossed to the ground by the high wind. The plane from Moncton experienced some difficulty with the wind but landed at Upton Airport without accident. No reports of serious damage had been received last night but huge waves foamed over the breakwater at Borden where the S5. Char- lottetown docks and seas pounded up on the shore all nloilg the coast- ns the storm swept over the pro- vincc. At Wi"lght's Bridge on the St. Pctcrs Road a fallen tree made the road impossible for motor traffic. A post carrying electric wires was also down in this section. At Canoe Cove a. large birch trcc, fallen directly across the road, caused considerable inconvenience and damage to passing motorists. In Charlottetown several trees were snapped off by the wind and carried down telephone and light wires. _ On the Southport road a tele- phone pole snapped off at Mr. Raoul Reymolld‘s driveway, Telephone lilies in many sections of the Province were down due to trees fiilllng across the wires. Line- men worked last night to restore communication on the more im- portant lines. Telegraph lines escaped serious damage. The greatest trouble was pear Hunter River where a. fallen tree disrupted service for a time during the late afternoon. The _ thermometer dropped twenty degrees in a few hours yes- lcrday, from 60 to 40 above. Nazis Leader Predicts An International Trade War HOP‘, Germany, Oct. l2-—(AP)— Rudolf Hcss, German minister without portfolio, predicted tonight an international trade war unless Germany regains her lost colonies. "Guns instead of butter," was the Nazi slogan today, said Hess. He amplified this with an assertion that Germany was forced to im- port so many raw materials for re- armament there was no money left for the importation of foodstuffs. Unless "the world gives Germany colonies having raw materials," Hess declared, "Germany will be forced to expornq any price, thus impairing the exports of other na- tions." If given back tile colonies taken her own territory the raw products which shc is now forced to buy abroad," Hess declared. Hess did not further amplify his “export at any price" assertion, but said: ' “Hitler's resolute foreign and political actions gave Germany po- litical independence, and by deter- mined economic-political actions Der Fuehrer will achieve the nat- ion's economic freedom. "We all know what huge quan- titles of raw materials we need to keep our industries going and to safeguard work for millions of lab- orers through complete rcarmam- ent.
