Dr. Krxeston, of Toronto, in consequence of failing health. has lately resigned the posi- ticn of Superintendent of the Meteorological Service of the Dominion, which he so ably filled since its commencement. He has been suegeeded by the Deputy Superintendent, Mr- Charles Carpmael, late Fellow of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and J ellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, a gentleman ef distin- quished sbility, and admirably qualified to bring to perfection the work began by Dr. Kingston. Lest av Sua. —-On the passage of the barque Unity, of Chatham, N. B., from Liverpool to this port last fall, a sailor named Edward Mc- Nally, while in the act of furling the upper maintop-sail, fell from the yard overbeard, and was drowned. It was blowing a gale at the time from the south-west. A life-buoy was thrown to him and every effort made to save him but, as he was unable to swim, he sank instantly. Various inquiries have been made by the shipping master—Mr. W. Koug- han—but he has been unable to find the par- ents or friends of the deceased. McNally, according to the articles in the shipping office, hails from St. John, N. B., but it is believed his people reside in a village outside that eity. In his trunk is a letter addressed to ‘‘ Patrick Nalley (care of Mr. James Nevin), Marsh Bridge, St, John, N. B. The parents of the deceased—should this paragraph eome to their notice—would do well by communicating with the shipping master at this port, as the cloth- ing, etc., of the deceased is there waiting their order. Penny Reapines.—St. Peter's Schoolroom Was over crowded last evening ; and the en- tertainment was the best and pleasantest of the season. There was a great accessien to those who usually take part, in the persons of Mr. Hermans, Mr. Williams and Mr. F. S. Longworth. Mr. Hermaas sung in the Ger- man language the original of that beautiful song, ‘‘when the swallows homeward fly ;”’ and though the words were not, perhaps, as well understood by the greater part of the audience as if he had sung those of the trans- lation, yet we have no doubt that Mr. Hermans was able to give better expression to the spirit of the seng in the speech of his “Fatherland.” At any rate there could be no doubt that it was highly appreciated. Notwithstanding the exertion of his veice on the night previous. Mr. Williams rendered ‘‘ Madoline’ so well, that, despite the fact that it was about ten o'clock when he sang, and the programme was still incom- plete, the audience evinced a strong desire for an encore. Mr. Williams adds to his popular- ity each time he appears in public. ‘he en- tertainment was closed with Mr. F. S. Long- worth’s sidesplitting reading about the Irish Schoolmaster. Mr. Longworth’s representa- tion of the Irish brogue aud character could be bettered by but few persons. The songs tung by Miss Palmer, Mrs. Strickland, Mrs. Mrs. McNab, and Major Freeland, were all well chosen and well rendered; and the in- sirumental music by Messrs. Vinnicombe, Watson and Wilson was very good. Miss Wright read a very pretty piece about “Woman's Work,” and Miss Smith thrilled the audience by her rendering of ‘‘High Tide in Lincolnshire.” Mr. W. C. DesBrisay read tapitally the comments of Lord Dundreary upon Poor Richard’s Proverbs. The Revds. Gee. W. Hodgson and R. D. Bambrick, and J. E. Haszard and W. L. Cetton each gave mitable readings. Taken for all in all, the entertainment was a mostenjoyableone. We hope that, after Easter, more of these pleasing “readings” may be given. Mr. L. W. Wat- son deserves great credit for the way in which he managed them during the past season. f —_——_~--—- — - <9e+— Special Notices. _ Just RECEIVED a large and well assorted iot Valentines, from 1 cent up to $1.00, at the Agricultural Store. —R.
