Tue walking tournament under the man- agement of Hartigan & Diggins, of Hali- fax, came offin the Skating Rink yesterday. Six contestants entered, viz., Leggett, Sus- sex, N. B., Fransham, Hogan, Hennessy, Lightizer, and Flinn, ali of the city. The prizes were, $50 to first, $20 to second, and $10 to third, and was awarded as follows : Ist prize, Leggett, 2ud Hogan, and 3rd Ligittizer. The track was laid off on the ground inside the Rink, and contained nineteen laps to the mile. Mr. C. Cal- laghan was appointed referee. A start was made at 11 ooleck, a. in., all, with the ex ception of Fransham, who complained of a pain in his side, were in first class order. L ggett led eff with several laps to his credit on the second hour, followed by Lightizer, Fransham and Hogan. Flynn, who had been badly equipped, retired from the track after walking feurteen miles. Fransham retired, from indisposition, after walking 34 miles and 13 laps, and Hennessy also retired when he completed 34 miles and ll Japs. The contest was now between Legyett,Hogan and Lightizer. Hogan, who had taken second place during the Sth hours, held that position and walked in good style to the finish, which took place at W415 p, In. “On the Vth hour the score stood : Miles. a Legget Lightzer is “9 Hezan . ton 45 6 On the 10th hour it stood : Miles. He was anything but fitted er trained for the race; and the fact that he walked over fifty miles in ten hours and a quarter, shows that he possesses the muscle ef which champion pedestrians are made. At the close of the walking match a five- inile go-as-you-please teok place, in which six contestants started, viz<s Dockendorff, 34 minutes, with Dockendorff second, and ‘Job Bavan, jr.,a lad of 12 years of age, fourth.
