Last night eighty men were stranded here, and would have been without food or beds. but for the timely intervention ol' Col. Ward, oi the Canadian Pay and Re- cord Ofilce, and the oilicials ot the Un- ion Jack Club for soldiers and sailors. Col. Ward has undertaken to foot their dinner and breakfast bills. and the men remained the guests ot' the club for last night. The eighty in the squadron all hail from the West, and with one or two exceptions have all seen active as cavalrymen. Although they are rather chary a- bout giving any information on the subject lt appears that “Eliot's Horse" was raised about three months ago by a well-known Winnipeg lawyer. who intended the men to join the Can- adian contingent as a recognized unit oi that force. it is asserted that they negotiated with the Canadian Militia llepartinent, but were told that mounted men were not wanted in the first contingent. lt should be stated that so lar as the military authorities at Ottawa are concerned, the irrespon- slhility ends there. The rest of the story savors more of fiction.
