§rom Mr. Dennis, Secretary of the Labour-
ers' Union, which puts the action of the.
Union at the present time in a new andl
different light. So far as the general pub-
lic is concerned, we have been uiider the
impression that the Labourcrs had -devel-
oped an unaccountable dislike to the Rail-
way stevedore and ex-President of their
Union. That they had demanded his re-
moval without rhyme or reason, and be-
cause the Railway authorities would not
comply with their wishes they _went on`
strike, and further broke their contract to
discharge a coal barge., From Mr. Deiiuis's
letter, the facts of which .we have verified_
by inquiry, it appears that the trouble be-I
tween tlie Union and Mr. Moiiteitli is not
of new origin. Away back in Mr. Me-Q
Ewen’s time, the Union made definite
charges against Mr. Moiiteitli, and the au-
thorities at Moncton appointed Mr. Me~_
Ewen to hold an investigation. Now, it,
must be to this initial tactical blunder onl
the part of the Railway that_the present
trouble may be traced. The Railway shouldi
not have delegated the investigation to the,
Superintendent. It put him in the _uiieli-
viable position of being tlie`arib_ter in the
matter of an appointment for which he was
not responsible, but for which he was ex-
pected to stand sponsor. He could not
faii‘ly adjildicate in the matter and give
satisfaction to. the parties concern-
ed, and should not have been asked to
conduct the inquiry. As it W2_\S. Q10 then
Superintendent undertook the inquiry. Ac~
eording to the report of thc Secretary of
the Union, the coniplainants soon_ found
that they could not conduct their case
without legal assistance, and applied f0l`
the necessary perr_nission. Mr. McEwen,
acting on instructions from Moncton, _de-
clined to give permission, and _so the Union,
finding themselves baulked withdrew from
the inquiry, but left _the charges on file-
tliese they did not withdraw. _ _
Now Mr. Deniiis’s letter is_the Iirst in-
timatioli that this former inquiry had been
gralltcil and proved abortlvc. Whatever
else it does, it shows _conclusrvcly that the
Unioli liadbcen nursing a grievance for a
considerable time _before taking the ‘”§`_
treiiie action of going on strike, and theii
justification is that they were refused _ a
full, fair and impartial investigation with
such legal assistance as they deemed ne-
cessary. The Railway authorit_ies at
Moncton were not justified in refusing this
assistance. Why, in the matter _of the in-
vestigation at Falconwood, the_ _Legisla-
ture not only granted the Opposition, who
represented the complainant, permission
to have two of their best lawyers on_the in-
vestigation for the purpose of probing the
complaints to the bottom, bu_t _granted the
ollicer implicated similar privilege. Why
should the Railway act differently regard-
ing the Labour Union and the official they
complain against? Are the interests of
Labour anyless than the interests of an in-
mate of Falconwood? We think that
everyone will agree that, irrespective
of the effects of the deplorable strike, the
Railway authorities have acted arbitrarily
in this matter. They have taken up the at-
titude of "We are the employers and we
demand the right to say whom we shall set
over the' other party to the contract, and
we decline to allow anyone to question our
right to adjudicate on ' `our ac-
tion.” even if injustice `and hard-
ship ensue. In days of old, shortly
subsequent to when “Adam delved and Eve
spun” such attitude on the part of the mas-
ter might have been practicable and per-
missable. -Today when the interests of La-
bour have as much right to respect and
consideration as those providing the' ca-
pital, different ethics prevail and must

ted to control prices Canada should have
and could have done, the same are either
superficial and ignorant or deliberately
trying to mislead. Anyone who gives the
slighteststudy to the geographical posi-
tion of Australia cannot fail to realize that
the problem which confronted Australia
was nothing like that which confronted

-ter; her producersare cut off from the mar-
kets of the world by thousands of miles of

Organs. The making of munitions throughout Canada
has made_a heavy demand on skilled labor, and there
has been an exodus of men from the Piano trade to
take up the work of munitions. In order to hold their
help. they_ have been forced to in-:reasc their wages
from to time._In 1914 when Wal' broke out, two
hundred and fifty men _enlisted from the lleintzman
and Karn-Morris factories. Many of these men were
the most proirlinenl in the piano business. Since 1914
the raw materials have advanced as follows.
