We have been shown some samples} of oileloth geods, which have been| turned out at the Kingston factory, aad which appear to be of excellent quality. They are manutactured in muslins, drills and ducks, and are largely used for} table-covers, and in carriage ri as and upholstery. It may not be general, | ly known that the manufacture of this! line of goeds is anew thing for Canada, | and illustrates, as well as anything can, | the beneficia! operation of the tariff, | under which one class of industry | gives birth to another. Form-| erly we had to import all our oil-| clothes, muslins and ducks from the States or Great Britain. No attempt | was ever proposed to import the DECES= | sarv skilled labor and make oilcloths for | ourselves. ing done, added by the tariff regula-| tions, Tne most approved machinery | has been set up und the most competent | workmen brought ever from the States | to carry on this new industry. So it | will be again seen in the experience | how one branch of produetion hinges upon another. The manufacture of cotton was a grand step forward, to commenve with ; then, when the mai ket was well supplied, the machinery was turned to betier sorts of goods, ducks and canton flannels, aud later on, pript- ing works were introduced, sothat to-day Canadian priots are sold by retail aiong- side of those from Manchesterand Fall River. The ducks so produced form the basis of the better kinds of oil-cloths undew notice, this branch of manufac- ture is coming to absorbs large portion of the output of the mills. The capital- ists ef Kingston, as well as those of our own citizeus who have pul money in the enterprise, are to be congratulated on the excellence of the goods yroduced, and upon their creditable adc ition to Cana- dian industry.—Londor, Ont., Free! A London cable despatch of the 14th inst., says several of the Lrish boroughs are taking advantages of the Easter re- cess to give a welcome totheir repres- eptatives in Parliament. Limerick presents the freedom of the city to Mesasrs Michael Davitt,E. Dwyer Gray, owner of the Dublin Freeman's Journal and member of parliament for County Carlow, and Charles Dawson, member for Carlow borough. On Tuesday, Drogheda wili make Mr. Parnell a burgess and feast him at a Corporation banquet. At Wexford, on Wednesday, a demonstration will be made in hoaor ef Mr. T. M. Healy, member for Monaghan, and of the Redmond brothers, one of whom, John,is a member for New Ross, and the other William, for Wexford borough. The private accep- tance of Mr. Parnell’s scheme to raise a fund which to pay a salary to the Nationalists members of Parliament is making rapid headway: The success of the project is becoming assured, The Catholic priests are giving active assistance to Mr. Parnell’s Land Pur- chase and Settlement Company, All the priests in the diocese of Galway have purchased ten shares each, and every curate five shares. The same thing has been dene in most of the Irish dioceses. The Conservatives in the House of Comnions have decided to oppose the extension of the franchise in Ireland. When the House goes into committee on the Franchise Bill, Mr. Henry Cawlin, Conservative member for Mid- Lincolnshire, will make a motion to that effect. Power of an Elephant’s Tail. Two young ladies were gazing at the white elephant as it stood enthroned in all its sacred splendor, and surrounded by the mystic emblems of his holy character and the adoring priests who were kneeling devoutly on every side. ‘How curious it is,’ remarked one, ‘that any race of people should be so de- luded as to worship an elephant.’ ‘It is indeed’ ‘replied the other sadly. ‘When I look upon this worshipping throng of ignorant, superstitious ; Sure, creatures and realize how earnest and sincers they are, I cannot but feel that that there should be norest until the missionary message is borne to the last one of these benighted heathen.’ ‘True,’ asserted the first speaker, ‘it | is agrand and solemn duty Just at this juncture the animal flick- ed its tail and str ne of tb -| - ruck 0 the Bad | scales repaired at Brown’s; and warranted to dhist priests in the mouth.’ ‘Howly Moses!’ he exclaimed, strolled on to the monkey cage.—PAil- | you require for the season, cheap, adelphia Call, thetic London has been paying s pilgrimage to the bridal dress of Mrs. Oscar -Wilde,..The shrine where the nuptial garment was exhibited, was the | for a new one. | Grafton Streeta, Ch’town. show-room of a fashionable French dress-maker in Regent-street. Angry friendsh‘p is not unfrequently as bad as calm enmity. Instead of fighting misfortune,we too often make it prisoner. It is a very easy thing for» man to be wise for other people. It is but an ill- filled mind that is filled with other people's thoughts. He that would be well spoken of himself, must not speak ill of others. The example of a ruler should have the force of law, and the laws of a rul- }ler should be enforced by his example. Truth—the open, bold, henest truth—- is always the wisest, always the safest, for anyone in any and all ciroum- stances, If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life, sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility. Consideration is the small coin of kindness and awffability; it is current everywhere, with all and always brings back a little friendehip. Wedo not have great trials and sharp agonies and heroic works to do every day. Itis very small strokes that make the diamond shine. Havethe courage to speak your mind when it is necessary that you shouid do so,and held your tongue when itis prudent that you should do so.
