A Moted Doctor Tells Some Things That May Not be Believed. ° The intoxicating effects of teais not ap- preciated as fully as they should be, either by the indulger in its effusion or by the i who is later called upon to untoward influence on the system and to give advice in regard to its further continuation. So very little is to be found in our text-books on the subject of tea-poisoning that, unless the facilities have been such as to make a study of it possible, a recognition of the condition is far from likely. That it a potent | factor in causing functional derangements of the gravest character is well known to those who have given its physiological action serious attention Of 1.000 consecutive cases applying for in our largest dispen were found to be and suffering and no one of physictan combat its is general treatment sary, 100, or 10 per cent indulgers in !tea, rious effects, liberal from its delet which came for treatment of the tea habit, but for various other complaints They were loath, when apprised of the cause of their illness, to believe that such a harmless household commodity ever pro- duced any bad effects. Of these 100 cases reported 20 per cent. | complained of persistent dizziness, 19 per ; cent. of indigestion, 45 per cent. of head- ache, 2 per cent. of despondency, 19 per | cent. of palpitation of the heart, and 15 per cent. of insomnia. Truly the foregoing isan array of troublesome symptoms of which any pernicious drug should be proud There is a great difference between physiological and poisonous effects of a | drug on the system. When tea has been used fora considerable period in excess |} and its detrimental action has been con- | stant, we have well defined symptoms | supervene, a few of which are such as | vertigo, mental confusion, sensible pal- pitation of the heart, restlessness, insom- nia, halluciations, ‘‘nightmare,’’ nausea, neuralgia, anorexia, constipation, pros- tration and anxiety, and a peculiar kind | of intoxication ending after hours of vigil | in a torpor from exhaustion. | What worse line of symptoms could fol- low the use of a beverage so commonly employed it is hard to imagine, and that use it to excess is unques tiona Many have confessed to an inability to ‘‘get through the day,’’ with out copious imbitions of what is, in many cases, a strong decoction. Some drink every twenty-four hours as much as fifteen pints, and some there are who are unable to judge of how much they consume, Whether a confession would be consider- ed a matter of shame, it is hard to say; the general lack of moral tone and the | total perverseness are so great. They are |} nothing more or less than genuine inebri- } ates, and look upon tea as the same agent | of support as an alcoholic does upon alco- | hol. It is high time that physicians | should recognize these cases of disomania | and study a method for their ameliora- i tion.—Dr. James Wood in Medical Record. i THE LAWS OF TEMPESTS. people peo} tio ble Influence of the Earth's Motion on the Di- rection of Winds. Suppose a railroad train at first station- ary. A traveller fires a shot towards some exterior object; it will require say two seconds for the ball to reach the object. Imagine next the train moving at the rate of thirty feet a second. The traveler aims at object the instant he is opposité it; but the ball in addition to the impulsion which has communicated to it preserves the gen- eral movement of the train, which in two seconds makes it travel laterally sixty feet. It will strike then at sorae distance be- yond the object. The rotation of the earth produces an | effect of the same kind upon movements | which occur on its surface. All the | points of the globe turn together from the | west to the east in twenty-four hours; | but they all have in reality different rates | of velocity according to the position which they occupy. At the poles the velocity } equator, where it reaches the enormous rate of 1,520 feet a second. kirk. While the Parisian, affected by the movement of the earth, passes through about 1,000 feet, the inhabitant of Dun- kirk traves only about 963 feet. +t us imagine now at Paris a wind from the south that is blowing towards Dunkirk, which is almost directly north from Paris. As Paris moves from west to east at the rate of thirty-seven feet a second faster than does Dunkirk, the wiftd from the south at Paris will be like the ball fired from the moving train; it will be deviated towards tle east, that is, towards its right, From being a south wind, which it was at Paris, it will be- come @ southwest wind; and it will reach Liege or Cologne instead of Dunkirk, which it would have reached had the earth been motionless. Thus all winds are turned from their first direction, and in the Northern Hemisphere this deviation is always towards the right, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is towards the left.—The Chautauquan. Hundreds of per- sons are said to have had diphtheria who only had a severe sore throat. The form of sore which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people cal] quinsy. “Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria An old hospital nurse in Boston, says : “It ain't the clear cold of winter that lays peo- ple up with colds, catarrh and sore throats, and lays the children low with diphtheria ; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet, slushy days.” This is very true, be- cause then the air is laden with poisonous vapors. The first symptoms of true diph- theria there is fever, some stupor, and dif- ficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are often feli in the neck glanda, just below the ear. The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which increase and turn to adirty yellow or brown color. Very many reliable pec- ple claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Lini- meat. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because we know from experience it will curea common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catarrh bronchitis, croup, etc., as promptly. If it cure theth, why not diphtheria? I. S. John- son & Co., Boston, Mass., will send their new illustrated book, entitied “Treatment for Diseases,” free to any person for the asking. The announcement that the British Parliament has passed aa act enlarging the constitutional powers of the Australian colonies so asto permit their concluding preferential trade relations with other col- onies is of great importance. The subject was among the earliest lealt with bv the Intercolonial conference which met at Ottawa last year, and the Imperial legis- lation just completed is one of the first practical results of that gathering. It’s All Nonsense For people to say there is no cure for consumption. Sufferers {from that dread disease and kindred ailments are being saved every day by Miller’s Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil. Do not die without giving it a fair trial. If it will cure others it will cure you. The secret of its success lies ip the fact that it creates new blood in the system, thus enabling sufferers from Jung troubles to overcome the destructive forces at work to waste the tissues of the body. Miller’s Emulsion is the great nerve strengthener and blood-maker, and cures coughs, colds, brouchitis, scrofula and all Jung agections. In big bottles 50c¢ and $1, at all drug stores. Hon. For ali pain and soreness.” ts Lieut. General Sir George T. Chesney, whose death occurred a shor time ago, will be best remembered by his clever bro- chure. “The Battle of Dorking,” which brought very vividly to the minds of the English people the fact that their country was yery ill prepared to resist an inva- sion. It was published anonymously in Blackwood’s in May, la7l, and gave a great stimulus to the demand for army re- form. Two months later the detestable purchase system was abolished, and in the following year the British army was entirely re-organized, the short service introduced and a reserve provided for. These changes have made such a calam- ity as “The Battle of Dorking” at the pre- sent day, for including militia, volunteers and reserves Great Britain can now place 600,000 well drilled men into the field to resist and invasion. If too rapid eating causes dyspepsia, and it in its turn produces nervous exhaustion, debility, weakness, anaemia, etc., the first step in effecting a cure is to eat slowly. The second and most important is to take a course of Hawker’s nerve and stomach tonic, which aids the process of digestion, invigorates the stomach, renews the vital ity of the blood, relieves brain fatigue, and makes weak neryes strong.
