Over and above the fact that the Island Intermediate Basketball Lea- gue match be-tween Abbies and Summerside Flyers at the P.W.C. Auditorium on Tuesday night was an exceptionally good game. the efficient refereeing of S-L W. L. Gillespie, R.C.A.F. Summelslde, made it one that was a real pleas- ure to WIIJJGSS.‘ Handling the whistle in a manner which was in keeping with his wide experience in refereeing profession- al matches in Canada and the Unit- ed States, S-L Gillespie called his decisions without any hesitation and in the cases of fouls or tra-vell- Ing, indicated the misdmieanor in a descriptive way which left no doubt in the minds of the players and fans as to who svas at fault and why. ' O O U Although occasionally his decis- ions dld not meet with the approval of all. he was oblivious to any beef- ing or razzing from players and fans, unles it looked like it was getting out of hand and then he would n-ip it in the bud with a curt “any more of that and out you go." o o I Despite the odd beef or sour look from one of the players, it was quite apparent from the way the boys played that the manner in which the game was handled was appreciated by both player and fan alike. The way in which he kept com- plete control of the gaune at all times, reminds this column of a similar job of refereeing done here a few months ago by "King Clancy" when he officiated at an exhibition hockey match at the Forum be- tween the Abbles and the Amherst Rambler. Although in an entirely different type of sport, it indicates that to be a good referee, you've got to know your game, and be firm and efficient at all times. It is hep- ed that S-L Gillespie will be in n position to appear here more often in the future. I O Local fans should be in for a good game of hockey here Friday night when the Borden Nationals will cross sticks with the Intermediate A-bbies 1n an exhibition encounter at the Florum. The Nationals have been icing a strong team this year, which was proved by the fact that they won over the Abbles 1n an en- counter there a few weeks ago. With the Ablbles sporting plenty of power on their lineup (his year, and intent. on avcnging thal dcfeai, it should nmke for an interesting en- DOUTI-I E1‘. one In connection with the Nationals this column would like to bring to the attention of its readers that in yesterday's sport page a slight enor was made in an account of a game in which the heading stated that the "Freetown Royals shut-out the Borden Na-t- ionals 13-0," and should read "Bor- den Albegweits," which is an entire- ly different team and are in no wny cormcctetl with one another. l o O Borden League officials announced yes- terday that a doubleheader hockey bill will be staged at the For-rm on Saturday night in Juvenile Hockey League play when the Srunmerside Sheen-dfclnnis pucksters will meet the Juvenile Vics, and the P.W.C. aggregation will cross sticks with the Abbles. The Juvenile League has been providing some smart hockey enter- tainment so far this season, and with the two matches slated for Saturday night should provide plenty of act/ion for local and Sum- merside fans. The first game is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 Providing weather pernnits. an- other Juvenile match will get un- derway at the 3.13M. rink tonight. between the P. W. Although the Abeglweits lost out in the final round of Central Senior Hockey League championship com- petition, it is nevertheless quite apparent that the Island can still turn out good hockey material. when Allie Carver and Cecil Dowl- m, both or Abbiefl. owned of! both the individual honors in the four- tealn Central ‘League competition.
