12 Sports edited by marc macdonald Hockey Panthers Drop First Two Games The UPEI Hockey Panther’s opened at home against the University of New Bruns- wick Varsity Reds on Friday the 8" of October. The game had an abundance of penalties, UNB goals, and off-ice distractions but it still managed to be a better hockey game than the Canadiens/Leafs opening game. The Panther squad played before a small but energetic hometown crowd and played hard but were plagued with penalties. UPEI were called for 14 penalties in total, allowing UNB to score an several power plays. The Panthers (36) were able to get more shots on net than the Reds (35), but came up short in goals as UNB took the match 6-2. Aaron MacInnis and Mike White each picked up a goal for the Panthers while Ryan Walsh, with 2 goals and an assist, was the top scorer for the Reds. The action taking place off- ice between periods and during the game was almost as entertaining as the game. The Panther mascots helped the fans young and old cheer the Panthers on and man- aged to get in a bit of trouble on the ice during the inter- mission. Fans also enjoyed the less than successful but highly entertaining Turkey Bowling and “two shots from one spot” intermission games. The Panther’s second game of the season saw them facing the Moncton Blue Eagles. UPEI also fell short in this game as Moncton was able to pull off a 5-3 victory. END
