Gevernments are expending large sums in delegations for the purpose of beu~ efitting our farmers. For the same pur- pose they are doing, or talking about doing, a great deal for cold storage. About a quarter ofa millioa dollars has also been spent in taking the plebiscite, and this aleo they aesure ue, bas been expended for the purpose of bencfitting the people. Now, this ia all right, as farasit goes. But our farmers ure, at the present, in need of more direct assistance. The governmeot no doubt, is aware of the almosi total fail- ure Of the grain crop lust year. This, com- bined with the partial failure of our fisher- ies for the last year or two, leaves the coua- try in an almost helpless condition. Unx less the government comes to tbe ail of the farmers in the important matter of pro~ curing seed there will be nothing to export next year as a great many will be unable to procure it themselves and as @ conse- quince, the money expended in delegations, as far as our farmers are concerned will go for naught. Formerly the farmers used to depend on the merchants ‘in such cases ; This year, however, the merchants’are ut™ able tocome to their assistance as they bave not got the seed to give them; and I think ‘it is now the duty ofthe govern- ment to take the matter in haad and see that seed is procured. Hoping thie mat- ter will be given deserv 2d consideration. I remair, yours truly, A. W. Broce. Red Point. March 4h, 1899. Half a Million For the Octopus. — Tt is confessed by the subsidized organ that the first thing the Standard Oil mono~ poly did after Mr. Fielding had given it this market was to increase the wholesale price of ijlaminating by two aud half cents a gallon. We uss, roughly speaking, 20,000,000 ,allons @ year. Tnis one operation, then, coste our people— assuming thatthere is no further increase during the year—half a million doliars. By a little‘act ot legislation giving the Yankee cctopus a coercive influence in this country, the Finance Minister, in ad~ dtion to driving our own reficers out of business and placing o'l-well owuers at the mercy of the Americans, and robbing our manufactures of their necsseary fuel oil, has taken $500,000 out of the pockets of our local oil consumers.
