We deeply regret !o have to announce the death of Mary Florence Me- Donald, daughter of D G Ms Dovalu Keq. Bonwell, Lot 30, sad event occured on the 20th inet. ing the lingering illness of deceased every~ means that suggested themee!ves to fond and loving parents were resorted to in the hope of herrecovery. But the most tender care and puraing of anxious parents and the best efforts of skiled physicans were unavailing. Theend came on the morn ing of the 20th inst, when the pure spirit lithe Mary Florence winged ita way to it Heavenly Home. The deecased was in th eigth year of ber age, and for one of sucl tender years was a rewarkably bright in- telhgent child. Her gentle winving wayg endeared her to ler parents, won the ways of her little playmates and madeher a geo eral favorite of all. On W ednesday the 20th nat. the funere! cortege slowly wended ics way to St Jcsepi’s Church Keily’s Cross, and was ope of the largest this locality for a number of years there being seventy carriages in the procession. The Mase of Regniem was sung by Rev J A E MeVonald, Hope River, uuele of deceased, who was assisted at the whieh wituessed 1 burial service by the pastor, Rev D B Reid, afier which the remains .of little Marv Florence were tearfully Jaid to rest in the quiet churcbyard of St Joseph. Needless totay Mr and Mrs McDonald have the heartfelt sympathy of the «om- munity in the loss of tueir on y and dearly beloved child. But in their sad bereave~ ment they find a sweet conso/ation in the words of the loving Saviour, ** Suffer jitule children tocome unto Me, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.’’ A li tle chair is vacast, A sweet voung voice is stil); While the bereft ones meekly bow In homage to His will. And as they prey “Thy will be done” Av avgel whispers this: “Parenis rejoice, thy loved one Lives with us for e’er in bliss.’ Sept 29, 1898. ’ —_ BRUTAL CLUBBING Negroes in the south have 4 habit of sticking matches, toothpicks and ciga- rettes behind their ears, and it is a com- mon thing to see one of them, when asked for a match, pull one of them out of the closely kinked wool just over his ear. Frequently they have a dozen or more stowed away there. Not long ago an Atlanta policeman, whose beat in- cludes ‘‘Rusty row,’’ a favorite resort for idle negroes, had eceasion to arrest a notorious vagrant, whose main occu- pation was fighting and draining the beer kegs Jeft in front of barrooms. This man, as usual, resisted arrest and attacked the officer fiercely. The officer saw that extreme measures were mecessary and, drawing his club, aimed a blow at the negro’s head. The result was as alarming as it was unexpected. As the club came in contact with the man’s head, just over the left ear, there was a cracking sound, and from the hai1 tongues of blue, sulphurous flame shot out. The negro dropped to the ground, and the club fell from the officer’s nerveless hand, while a look of wild eyed amazement appeared on his coun- tenance. ) He had hit people with the same club before—in fact, rather frequently—and blood had sometimes followed the blows, but never before had they drawn flame and smoke. He was about to leave the place hurriedly, not knowing what he had done, when his victim sat up and ‘said reproachfully: ‘‘Go way, man! You done splode all my matches and swinge my ha’r offen my haid.’’ The officer was so much relieved that he broke his record by letting the man go hia way in peace.— Washington Star. ee WOoondD’s PIHOSVHODINE.
