Thompson, chap- lain of the First Washington Volunteers, now in Manila. Rev. Mr. Thompson wasan Islander, born at St. Peter’s Road, near this city and -in early life, lived at the family homestead at Syd- ney Mills, Suffolk, where his brother Mr. Hugh Robert Thompson' still rp- sides. ___Mr. _W. J. Thompson, of Dunstaffnage, is another brother. Mrs. Wm. Rodd, Brackley Point., and ,Miss ThomPson,‘of Washington Stale' on the _Pacific coast, are sisters of the deceased minister. - The iirstzwife of Mr. J. R. Thompson, station -master in -this city 'was also'a sister. Rev. J. R.--Thomp- son _received his collegiate training at Queen’s College, KingstiJli\»`.`0nt., and his first pastoral chargewas in,_HaJifax, Nearly thirty years ago he- received a call`to tlie'Pacific' coast_'an'dfgiwent to Olympia, where lie ministered for some time. Subuquently he. _held pastoral charges in Vancouver 'and Aberdeen, both in Washington State. _Last sum- mer lie accepted the chaplaiucy of the First Washington Volunteers and when the regiment was sent to Manila some four months ago he accompanied them' thither. He wrote home to his brothers from Honolulu while on the passage ont, and again after his arrival in Manila, one letter from him having been received but a few days ago. It made no men- tion' of illness and he was believed to be in good health at the time of writing, butit takes several weeks for a letter to reach P. E. Island from Manila. The first tidings of his death reached his brother through theztelegrapli despatch in TEE Guaapinr and they were natur- ally much distressed to read it. Rev. Mr. Thompson visited the Island in the spring of 1891, having been summoned from the Pacific coast by the illness of his father, the late Isaac Thompson,who died. however before the son reached home.
