She is e. mem- ber of the Chicago Civic Opera d. gompany and was proclaimed by critics to be the finest Madame Butterfly heard in years. From the beginning to the end of last night's program. Miss Gon- zalez displayed her remarkable gifts to the very best advantage. From soaring bird-like tones to those depicting deep feeling and dramatic fervour she ran the whole gamut and range of musical inter- pretation. Shc is absolutely at hcme in any language she chooses w use. and from the very first number captivated and enthralled her aud- ience with the versatility and var- iety of her singing. For her first group she chose four lovely Italian songs. “O dei mic amato hen." by Dllnaudy ~ a dram- atic settlng of a poem, whose tragedy is depicted in the closing words, call. but ah, in vainl }And weeping is my only comfort." "fhe interpretation of this lovely song left nothing to be desired. A mharmlng pastoral love song in Lighter vein followed - “Berger- ette" by Recil; and the other two in this Italian group were written by Rcsplghl and Woif-Rrmrl. The first ls described as "a. waft of per- fume on the breeze." and the other lfls a song of greeting entitled, "I1 Send You a Thousand Greetings." ‘After this very first groua, liziss Gonzalez was compelled spond to an encore. From Puccini's opera “La Bohe- me" the recltalist chose the aria "Dondc Lileta," in which Mimi bids farewell to her broken-hearted lover Rodolfo, returning sad and forsaken to her childhood home — there to die. Throughout the entire program the dramatic fervour of .M.L5s Gonzalez’ singing was en- lhanced by her expressive gestures jbut at no time was this more in evidence than in this beautiful oria. l, In the third group, songs by two Well-known British composers. John ire and and Haydn Wood and two lesser-known Americans, Richard .Kountz and John Hyatt Brewer, were featured. The first song of this group entitled “If there were dreams fto sell" is a lovely offering of this ,popular Erlglish writer and the iother three songs, "Ellie Uttle French Clock," "The Fhlry Pipers". and "When the Home Bells Ring lAiiflin" all proved most popular uith the audience and were sung with much insight and deep feel- mg. I But perhiipg it was in the appeal- ing and lilting folk-songs of her ‘native islands that Miss Gonzalez’ remarkable gifts as an actress were exemplified. In these songs she portrayed the Philippine spirit in a most realistic mariner. A group of Spanish and Mexican songs, including the well-known deservedly popular "Estrelllta" (Little Star) brought Miss Gon- zalez’ part of‘ the program to a close. These four songs were inter- preted with all the fire and dash that the Spanish rythm calls forth and the singer gave to them such s. fine rendition that she was recall- ed time and again. She very graci- ously responded with many en- coves. One of our own Canadian pianists, Mary MacKlnrion Shore, of Toron- to was called on at short notice to be the accompanist for the singer and she contributed a grou of four piano numbers all of whlc were enthusiastically received.
