To the Kditer of the Wraminer. ) Your issue of the 7th inst. contains an article entitled ‘““The Egg Trade.” The writer, Mr. Lemuel Arthur, inentions the fact that Our Oggs dv not go into the Boston | market in as good condition as eastern eggs, and, eensequently, have to he sold ac lower price tharr the latter ; and wishes bi hypress on-the minds of farmers and others keeping fowls, the need of asing more care to keep their egys clean. Now, | know well that there is 2 great, deal of truth in Mr. Arthur's remarks. Oureggs do not reach the on ” market paid for fresh eggsfreu Maine, New Hamp- shire, and Verment, or ‘‘eastern eg ’ as they are called; and, thongh one cent per dozen may appear, to seme, a smail item, it amounts on the tetal shipments of eggs from this Is}; rh to about ten thou sand dol- “ 48, ut lavsayear. ‘Chis rs’ sei ie thing b etter than $180.00, as tr Arthur's letter has it, (by a ty pographic errer, possibly) ai is an yenpt cer aint) worth saving, if by alittle a can be dene. i do not beliove, however, that the fact that our egys are not clean cnouyi: is the only reason for the prejudice against them, as Air. Arthur «ppears to intimate. A still ereater cause of the depreciation exists in the fact that Cres y are not fresh enough. And while Mr. Arthur is using his influence favor 7 his wing enys permit ie to sav a wordiu favor of having them /resh. in ert that our eggs may reach the United States markets while they are still fresh and retain al! their fine Havor, there ave several things to be guarded against by all who have envthing to do with them. First. Delay in forwarding should be aveided as much as possible. Farmers, buyers in the Coun ey) and shippers, al] should make it a rule to keep sending their stock ferward as fast as it accumulates, that the least iime possible way elapse sisi time the eggs are laid till they are 1 in. the. Beston market. ia warm Pecaiher. particularly, this is very imporit- ant, and the loss resulting frem eggs being heid back is much greater than any except shippers can imagine, Many farmers, and a few tra also, take a practice of keeping their eggs en hand fer weeks, in the hope ef being able to extract another half per dezen from the shippers. Some pack them in salt, some in lime, and others simply beld them as they are. In all cases the results are alike: the quality of the eggs is greatly impaired, these par- ties gain little vr nething, the shippers suf- fer ac baie and the reputation of our eggs is injured in the foreign market. If all cusrabedt how much the trade is injured by this practice, | think there are but few who would be so unserupnious as to contin- ue it. Secend.- to get they are ¢ the outside the air and themselves enamel is in my it cle ity ' Ifrs, cent should never be ailowed their natural condition covered with a sort of enamel on of the shell, which excludes preserve the ‘eggs they are wet, this moved, the shells become porous and the air, and the eyes are guickly destroyed. Hence, eggs should never be washed, however desirable it is to have themclean. They should cettainly be kept clean if possible ; but if they must get soiled, it is better that they remain so than to attempt to remedy the evil by deing a still greater injury. Dampness, too, in the material in which they are packed is very destructive to eggs, and persons pack- ing them should be sure that the straw, chati, or whatever materiab they use, i perfectly dry and> clean. frequently come te the writer’s hands se badly packed in this particular as to render 3 Keys wet. i Hy ” ? helps to na When re Yreor'e¢ adn it is fas much as two-thirds) of their contents, and resulting in a loss of ten or twelve dol- lars to somebody. (From tre ‘lalifas dTeral: i, ) Within the last few monthe é Gonsider- able amount of speculation in ge ald ‘wining has been engaged in, both by Nova Scetians and fereigners, Many mines in the vicinity of Halifax have changed hands, and, under the impetus given by a sufficiency of capital, and the skilful direction of experieficed then, have proved successful ventures. Ex- perts who bave examined the gold belt running almost from one end of the province to the other, and who have expended a large arnount of time anda trouble, in mak- ‘ing such examination thororgh in every a jTespect, say that this belt issthe richest. in the world. If one may judge from the f returns of the two Montague mines, that is, percentage vold centained lin a given quantity of quartz, tls opinten would seem te be a cerrect one. This is not thestase, for throughout the whole of ihe suid. ion, “ oe 1 consists, as was said before, ME belt inning from one end of the provin “to the cthor, near the Atlantic vehotip}- mines eqnaily rich are toi he -found which only await developmegt, to_ be- confe sonrees remuneration fully as great. One mine in particular, which may © be mentioned as an instance of this, is the ‘* Fifteg: Mile Stream Mine,” ee Halifax on the berders ef County, about midway between peyeta and Sheet Harbor. This 1fite’ wils' covered about six years agé, buildings erected, and operations commenced. F pou the great richness of the boulders fon : around, it was felt by their owners that mine conld net prove a paying inveatme a jand, indeed, for a while it id tt un- | fortunately, the main lead could not be i found, and the place was finally aband ! by all but some half dezen. These knew- ing that gold was there in plenty, if it ceald only be found, persevered, and in the end amet the reward that generally awaits patience and perseverance—they fonud the lead. This was in the antiims of last year, They im ‘opened negotiations with parties in» and succeeded in eflecting, at a fair price, the sale of one-half the mine. Thue, provided with capital the necessary preliminary workings were entered vpon and ev erything made ready for commencing mining operations in the spring. This:has been done, and so far about one hundred tous of quartz have been raised, yiel an average of three ounces of cold to the ten. The gold i is said to be of a superior quality, as indeed ail Nova Scotia gold is. From aome specimens of the quartz shown by one ef the owners of the anine, we sheuld be inclined to predict even a larger yield than that above stated. ‘This mine is of course only one of the many with which the Prevince is filled—one of the many only awaiting discovery and the advent of w little capital, backed up by enterprise, to repay a lundred fold their fortunate pos- sessors. A great portion of the future im- portance of Nova Scotia is centered in her gold mines, and the sooner her people wake up to that impertant fact, and avail them- selves of the riches which Natuve has placed within their reach, the better. + Qo King’s vollege Einceenia.
