The significant thing, said the speaker. was that this young missionary. injured wsntonly by s member oi this race, was back at his post serving than as soon as condit- ions allowed him to return. This is the love which Jelus ll- lustrates by the parable of the Good Samaritan. I. love above re- venge. a love that ministers to human need in whatever form it appears. There are two words for "love" in the Greek New Testament. one is the love or friendship. the love that is based on lilting. we love our friends because we find that smncthiitg in them which satisfies our hearts. This is the love which calls forth a response in kind. and makes anything one can do for his friend a delight. The other word is love with a purpose. a love which is independent or the char- acter of its object and answers to his need. This love is directed by the will. and is inspired. not by what we see in men, but by what we have found in Christ. It is the overflow at a nature that is Christ-filled; it is a reflection of the love which Christ has Dour- ed into our hearts. As John puts it. "We love because he has first loved us." That is to any, we love God and we love men because God Al. CHARGE. - Sunday, February 24th. Stanley Bridge ii. A. M North lluslico 2.30 P. M. Rcv. George Gough. Minister. HOLMAN'S Ci-IARLOTTETOWN and Life M ., i.L.o. i Canada ight) 3 For lave uiedistely after the scene of the foot-washing dealt with last week. Judas. the traitor, leit the room to carry out his bargain iorr the betrayal of his Master. This dis- cordant factor removed. Jesus turned to the Eleven with these words: "A new commandment I give to you. that you love one an- other; even so I have loved you, that you also love one another." This is the love oi the Christian fellowship. the love for the inner circle oi the followers of Jesus. lie expands this idea in the fifteenth chapter of John.-particularly un- der the illustration oi the vine and the branches. He said: "1 am the vine; ye are the branches." Now each branch is united with the other branches only through the parent stem. Christ eiopiolned the bearing of this on the com- mand to love one another by say- ing. "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love." 0 O 0 What a tremendous comparison! The love of the Faiher for ills only Son is the type and measure of the Son's love for us. God is love: His Son is lnilnilely worthy of that holy love. The personal assurance of that love given to Jesus at ills baptism changed the whole world for Him and sent lllm out on His divine mission. wow that love of God 'ior ms, lson ls Christ's own illustration oi, His love for us. A moment laler He added: "Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends," The Church's love for the world is shown by the sacrifices she makes and the cfioris she puts iorih to win men to God in every land. But there must be. accord- ing to Christ. A love of Chrlsilnrrsl for one another , of the aomel character as liis love for us all and the direct effect in us of that love. A lzrcat deal has been sold and is being said about the failure of Chrisiirms to love one another as they ought, and mucii of it is de- scrved. And yet. who oi us has not found In our church fellowship a lrenri-aailsim-ilnn and an inspira- tion that we find nowhere else? it ought to be Warmer than it is. but even as it is, it is a. well- spring oi giadness. and a source of , power. I 3 Two questions. First, how is it to be maintained? Christ nnswers. by llteeping ills commandments. These verses are read in our marriage service. and we know that the love 'of the wedded pair . depends on 5keeping the pledges given each lather in that hour. God holds the pledges which each gives the other. and any failure to keep them cuts run off from the source of all true ,love in lilm. so in the sacred com- lmunioxi of God's people in the lDivlnc Society-it is by diligent niuliilment nf the obligations nf that love? Aizain. Jesus answers: .”By this shall all men know that iron are my disciples. if you hiivc .love for one another." ! Look at our ideal! When we have gone another as Christ loves us, we draw the world to Him. Literature And Life By IOOKHAN 5:1- A GARDEN OF THE MIND. Recently I looked inw iuv. J. P. Greece had It and so had Rome and England. Then think oi the writers who gave us the Scrip- tures. MscPhle shows how great was the output in the things of the mind: here it is: "It has been said that Piclou is noted for coal and ciergymen. Tolerance In Religion A Way To Brotherhood I A feeling of true brotherhood cannot be experienced between two persons unless each respects rhe religion of the other. because any man who believes his own form of religion is the only truth is not. in spirit, a brother to those of other faiths. He is. in his own mind. a superior being rather than a bro- 'ther. The great truths that men live by the idea of God. tho sending of it Medslnh or-nvnier as an inter- mediary with men. the immortal- ity of the spirit are to be found in the Scriptures of all the great world religions.
