Satisfaction increases among Democratic Sen- ators and Representatives as they more clear- ly pereeivé in the Administration’s declara- own policy, aud impending confusion and strife in the Republican ranks. Nobody now Ravager ye to misunderstand the important ef- ect of the condact of the President and Sec- retary of State. Generel Harrison has evi- dently lost faith in the congressional leaders of his party, and means to lead himself. If they prove mutinous, his order of the day will stand as an appeal to the people. Tbus far the feeling and judgment of tho stronger and more independent men of both sides go, with the administration. On the merits of the case they believe the President is right and that he will win.” Assuming that some importance may be attached to these statements we may take it for granted that the Grits will be dis- appcinted in their hope that political capital was to be made out of the loss of trade and discuntentment which would materially arise on account of additional impositions upon exports from Cauada to the States. ee om or Notes and Comments. ~—-There were on Tuesday last two execu- tions in Cansda—one at Belleville and one at Quebec. On Saturday last there was another in London. Murderhas been an unpleasantly frequent crime in Canada the last year or two, without adequate punish- ment being meted out to the perpetrators. The fact that three executions have fol- lowed each other in such quick succession may, as the Montreal Gazette remarks im- press upon people with homicidal tenden- ¢ies the fact that indulgence thereof has very ugly consequences when the law is carried out, and that the law is very likely to be carried out. —A statement of goods exported from the Dominion during the month of May last shows the export of the produce of Canada to have been $5,992,441, as com- /yared with $5,963,030 for the same month | last year ; the produce of other countries, | $764,283, compared with $535,305 for May 1889, making a total of $6,756,724, com- | pared with $6 550,332 for the same month ‘In the previous year. The gvods entered | for consumption amounted in value to $8,- | 867,797, on which a duty of $1,745,931 was coliected, compared with $9,846,429 and a duty of $1,904,689 for May, 1889. There were at the credit of the depusitors in the Post office savings banks on the 3lst of May $21,357,554, and on the same day last year there were $22,132,854. -—The London papers have been much amused at a recent experience of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Thecomposer was curious to witness the first appearance of Leonore Snyder as Giavetta in *‘The Gondoliers,” so he strojled into the back of the dress- circle about the time of Gianetta’s first entrance, and as he was anxiously watching Miss Snyder he unconsciously ‘*hummed” her part aloud. One or two indignant glances were cast around without any affect on the composer, andat last a gentle- my money, sir, tohearSir Arthur Sullivan's music—not yours.” Is is said that Sir Arthur highly approved of his interrup- tion. ; LEFTERS TO THE EDITOR. School Examination. Srr,-—I had the pleasure of attending the | halt-yearly examination of Red Point school. ; This school is ably presided over by James 'P. McLaren, teacher. | The schovlroom is nicely painted and furnished with good maps and blackboard , Some improvement might be made in the | desks and seats aud their arrangement. | The examination showed thorough and | careful work on the part of the teacher, and ‘aptness, interest and proficiency on the |part of the scholars, and was very credit- able to both; while the ordcr and obedience was all that could be desired. t was pleasing to see several of the rate- payers present, and their words of praise end satisfaction must have been an en- couragemert to teachers and scholars, I ain sorry to say that there are tov maay dis- tricts in which the parenis think they have done their part when they p»y their tax and send their children to school, without ever dropping m to see what they are taught, or to give a word of encvurage- ment. At fourthe same evening the annual meeting was held, to which the ratepayers turned out in force, and transacted their business with the greatest harmony and intelligence—voting twenty five dollars for current expenses, and twenty dollars for supplement. Dr. Inch, President of Mount Allison University, was called to the platform. He thought that these Conferences would have to do more for this fund than they had done. (If not, the work will be serivusiy erippied. Be spoke of the relizious influences that Ladies’ College easily kept its leadership. A musical conservatory would soon be opened, Their endowment fund now realized $100,000. The Male Academy would have to be reorganized. He spoke against federation, and claimed that if it were carried in Ontario it would affect us in the east. Dr. Stewart began by saying that he had been in this work twenty years. Last year had been one of the most laborious of his life. He had had a good class of young inen ander his care. Dr. Burwash declared that ke had the utm« st confidence in. the professors and their work at Sackville. Their College prop.r had increased four fold in tweniy yeari. Dr. Smith, Classical Professor, made a most effective speech. He thought that the Scriptures were not as well known as formorly. At the request of the Conference, Dr. Dewsrt was invited to say a few words on Confederation, in reply to Dr. Inch. His remarks were in excelient taste, and were well received even by those who differed from him. Thereupon Dr. Pupe moved a resolution of thanks to Dr. Dewart, which Was unanimously passed. * AFTERNOON SESSION. Rev. W. J. Kirby presented the report of the Parsonage Aid Fund Committee. Grants were voted to Sheffield, and also to Mount Stewart. The latter mission was voted $50 to help to pay for the Parsonage recently bouglit. Rev.
