Ssephori's' Anglican Church Annual Meeting -inc annual meeting of St. Stephen's Anglican church was neru recenuy in the Church with the iteciur: me NOV. ingraham as Chairman. The meeting open- ed with prayer for the Parish and was followed by the reading of the minutes oi the last. annual meeting. Then the Treasurer's re- port was given by Mr. lvnn liar- rington. He reported that envelope IIIDSCTIPIIUIIS had shown a all- able incerase during the year and this was sufficient to eliminate the necessity of the usual Fall finan- cial collection. He noted that after much concern we ended the year with a very small balance. The reports of the Burlington and Seaview Branches of the Wo- men's Auxiliary. and the Sunday Schools in the same areas show- ed evidence of a fruitful year. Membe ship had increased in all cases all obligations met. The Cemetery Committee report was given by Mr. Caseley Adarm in the absence of the Treasurer. Mr. Leigh Paynter. Besides showing a ' ” balance on hand. Mr. Keith Adams was commended for having kept the Church yard well mowed during the summer. The Rector in his personal re- port noted that after several busy years the Church had an easier year as far as repairs go. This, however, would not be the case in 1955 when several big Jobs had to be done. In his statistical re- port he mentloned that five of the oldest members of the con- gregation had passed away in the year and requested a suitable per- iod of silent prayer in memory of their lives and works for Christ. The success of the Every- member Visitation and Canvas held in I953 was evident in the increased attendance. the corres- ponding increase in the prayer life oi the people. and in the siz- able increase in the voluntary giv- ing. He thanked the men for hav- ing so spiriiedly cooperated at their Bishop's request in another visitation and canvas which re- sulted in a further pledged iri- crease by all subscribers. In cloa- ing his report the Rector thank- ed the Officers and people of the Church for their enthusiasm and cooperation during the year. The main object of their plans for the new year was the cele- brations of their 100th anniversary this summer. It is planned to hold a week of Services around the last of June with different speak- ers each night. A Committee was set up to make final arrange- ments consisting of the Wardens and Vestry together with rep- resentatives from the W. A. and the A. Y. P. A. With this mile- stone in their history in sight the congregation have made plans to redecorate the interior oi the Church in March and possibly the outside later. The Ladies of the W. A. have signified their inten- tion to purchase material for, at least, a Green Set of Altar Hang- ings. to be dedicated at the open- ing service of the Anniversary The Vlesii at City and Central COOK'S for perfect plcturas.. The debates having taken place in the latter part of the COVEHEAD PASTORAL I By Illa Eminence (Copyright) BREAK VICIOUI CYCLE OF THINKING. ACTING The prob' of ompioyo -osn- ployee relations has always claimed a great deal of attention from all sectors of society. Es- pecially during the last 50 or so years. the problem has become particularly acute owing to the vast and penetrating development of technology and induatraillsm. with this development, there has been an increasing conflict between industrlalism's self -gen- erated need for expansion and consequent voracious demand for efficiency to maintain itself on one hand. and the social and spiritual needs of man on the other. It soon becomes obvious to an observes that at the heart of this problem is the question of power and force. Unreasonable demands for efficiency go hand in hand with nec "y to accumulate great concentrations of power and force. Power and force are principles of opposition. A war between the two is only necessary where a spontaneous unanimity is lack- ing. Love. not power and force. is the true principle of unity- since love is the union of like wills. Love of God and neighbo , the greatest of the commandments enjoined upon us by God. is has- ed'- on a recognition of trntli.. the nobility of the human intellect enlightened by grace and an ad- mission of the fraility and yet dignity of the human person. The virtue of charity has been the great means of unifying Christ- endom throughout the centuries and of constituting the people not only as a unified spiritual body, but also as a social body. SPIRITUAL UNION The spiritual union in the mys- tical body of those formed in the image and likeness of Christ, is reflected in the social union of the people on the purely natural level. Just as love gives unity and cohesion to the spiritual life, so one and the some love makes for unity of purpose and action in social life. Religion and the worship of God cannot be what they are un- less the principles of love and faith which govern oar spiritual life, find their counterpart in our social and economic life. The spiritual life is not one thing, and the life whereby we gain our livelihood. another thing. We cannot satisfy the needs of the body at the expense of the soul. Nor on the other hand can we say that we are truly Christ- ian if our spiritual life does not have any relation to the social circumstances in which we find Thoughts For Our Time Cardinal Mcbiuigan ourselves. It is a denial of the Christ Life we bear within us, to look upon the material conditions of life in this world as a prison, which prevents us from escaping and realizing freedom. Our mortal life is the condition under which, and the means by which, we gain true freedom and eternal life. "1 am the Way, the Truth and the Life." It was God become Man Who spoke these words - a Man Who lived in the world just as you and I. A Man Who knew the social problems of his time and offered an abiding solution for them. MAN'S IILINDNESS It is a solution which we in our blindness refuse to apply. if Christianity has any meaning it is that God became Man to sanctify the world, the things in it and especially the means that man must use to attain salvation. In a word, our moral and spiritual life cannot be separated from our social and economic life, if there is to be peace and unity in those phases of our life. any more than we could conceive of union with God without love. We recognize that a conflict of rights engende s tension. This is natural. it is not the tension which is wrong; but the resolu- tion of the tension in terms of a war between powers is wrong, unnatural and unchristian. Char- ity brings a true and peaceful resolution of these forces. Justice which is called upon to settle these conflicts. Is not true justice unless tempered by love and mercy. No one disputes that laws which prescribe certain mechan- ical devices for attaining a bal- ance of power between govern- lie these laws are the product of a by the present state of our own- on a display of power and force. charity to be introduced. We have come to look upon the prob- lem of social unrest only in terms of resolving the conflict of rights by a clash of the opposing forces. Because charity is unfor- tunntaly absent. we do not sea any place for it in reconciling the opposing powers. If we would solve our social problems and break through this vicious cycle of thinking and act- ing, we must rise above our- selves. Man cannot pull himself up by his boot straps any more than he can swallow him self. He needs the help of God, which enables him to realize his true human capacities for love and union with his brethren as well as his supernatural capacities for union with God.
