CHARLOTTETOWN City Ijlospital Graduates Addressed By Dr. Shaw - "No longer do we think of edu- cation as having its chief merit in the fact that -we cannot use it." Dr. L. W. Shaw, Deputy Minister ' of Education. told the graduates of the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nurses last evening speaking at the formal graduation exercises, Dr. Show declared that a. class . of this kind was "perhaps the fin- ; est possible example of the results of a program of education that combines the cultural and practi- cal to a ranarkable degree. The background of general edu- cation required for entrance to the nursing professioi has been in- creased in recent years to provide an adequate foundation for the tremendously important education based upon the newer concepts of medicine and nursilld. the Slllllk" noted. "Perhaps one of the moat note- worthy discoveries in respect to education," he added, "has been the realization that the whole pcrson goes to school and not Just I the brain. The older idea was that the school should concern itself iwith packing the brains with licnowledge and with trainins lvllt pupil in the skills of reading. writ- ing and arithmetic. of course. lrljlls continues to be an important part of education but educators have come to realize that the chlld brings not only his brain to school but his emotions, his body and his social attitudes. lnseparablo "No longer does the educnlof think of himself as a kind of glor- ified service station attendant pressing the valve and filling up the tanks-that is the brains-of pupils with all sorts of knowledge. we now understand that we can- not separate mind and bodY Slld emotions. They are merely facets of a unified whole. that is the per- son, and this person or orilalllsm lioncts to each situation in life i as :1 whole. , Dr. 1.. w. Shaw . nurses, themselves. have been rather inclined to accept the gen-, erai 'public's idea of their job as having to do only with carrying trays, taking temperatures, mak- ing beds and seeing that medicine, time-justj as even yet some people are prone. is given at the proper to think of the teacher us merely a dispenser of knoivledge. Pro- gressive leaders in the nursing profession now think differently. They know that nursing is a pro- fession which requires great know- ledge and great skill and in which one can go on learning and grow- ing all through life. "I happen to be an advisory member of your Examining Board in matters dealing with education- al standards, types or examinat- ions. etc. Let me say quite frankly that I have been astounded at the vast amount of knowledge requir- ed from graduate nurses. Of course it is important to have skill in making beds and bathing patients. Of course it is important to be nurse'; training lies in her ability to minister to the psychological need. of her patients as well as to the physical needs. "she must be able to treat pat- ients not only as sick bodies. but 35 51(3); persons; person. who have their needs beside the need for food. for medicine, for rest. surely the aim of the good nurse is to make sick persona well and to keel! them well and to do thld. She should be aware of all the needs of her patients, physical. mental, and emotional. You see we have learned that when a. person is sick. he is not normal. Not only is he sick in body but his whole beinxl-S changed. His outlook on life is dif- ferent, his emotions are upset and it is with this generally upset person you have to deal. "In view of these well establish- ed facts. I think no one would have the temerlty to say that preparation for nursing is merely a training in certain skills and techniques. Certainly it is that. but it is much more, involving as it does the profound study of man- kind itself. W. fact that you are living in, that you have been educated in. and are now going out to work in this golden age of your profession. Added Responsibilities "In yours.as in all walks of life. however, increased and improved privileges and opportunities bring with them added responsibilities. This is one of the principles of democracy. Indeed. it is one of the fundamental principles of christ- ianity itself-"To whom much is given, of his much shall be re- quired." Now I must be careful or I shall find myself preaching at you and far be it from me to preach to you on this the evening of your graduation. Indeed, I feel that it is unnecessary to do so for I am sure that this sense of re- sponsibility to your profession and to those whom you are to serve has been as much a part of your education as has the acquiring of knowledge and the developing of skills." Dr. Shaw went on to stress the importance of nurses having inter- ests outside those of their pro- fessions, and of developing their personalities fully and completely. Reid, was read. Brig. Reid show- ed how activities of the group had gone far to bring a closer undarstand-ing between parents and teachers of West Kent School. A newer and brighter understand- ing had developed as a result of these gatherings. The sum of 3100.00 had been raised by the Association for prizes for the graduating class at west Kent this year. A report was then given by Mrs. Darrell MacGuire, on the progress of the school closing conimiillee. The thanks of the meeting was extended to Mrs. MacGuire, Dr. L. E. Prowse and Mrs. Walter Hynclman for their nplendid work on the school clos- y ing committee. On motion of the meeting. the secretary was requested to write Mr. Roland Taylor, a valued member, regretting his illness and wishing him a speedy re- covery. The secretary. Mr. Arthur L. Wright, then ta-bled his report, covering the highlights of the )car's activities. He also streesed the value of this organization and its constant aim, which is to pro- mote culture among the students and allow them certain advantages which had not been available to the parents. . , Mr. Fred l-line then movn.d votes of thanks to Brig.
