CHAIN FoR CLEVELAND A New York naper of week ago last Mouday says :—A tall, broadshou! dered man,« I apparently tity five years, walked into blinder Seventh street bar ber shop in Philadelphia this morning and seated himself in a chair, A heavy black beard covered his and his shirt front and was finally lost to sight ' his Jace within the capacious recesses of wiaisteoa ‘Hair cut, sil said the ft he began to tuck towl around the collar of his customer, preliminary to picking up his shears. The old man, who bad been busy with his beard, dur- ing tuis interval new exposed it to the astontshed gaze of the shopmen. It re- ached three inches below his knees whoo it was upncoiled. He replied :— “No, but”—here he glanced around the shop with a Wriumphant smile—“l want this beard taken off clean.” Apparent- ly seeing that some explanation would be welcome to the astonished gathering of barbers and customers the old) man siid in tones that showed the emotion stirring withio him :-— “For tw enty-lour years no razor lias teonched my face.” It was in 1860 chat I was as spruce ayoung chap as ever | kicked up his heels ct a wedding, and} everyone knew young Joe Barstow in those parts. Instead of being so many graceful ornamests at the marriage ceremony, as nowadays, the bridesmaids in olden times had various duties assigned them. Thus one of their principal tasks was dressing the bride on her wedding morn- ing, When any ommissioc to their toilet was laid to their charge. Ata wedding, to, where it was arranged that the bride should be followed by a numerous train of her lady friends, it was the first bridesmaid’s duty to play the jpart of a drill mistress ; “sizing” them, so that “no pair in the procession were followed by a taller couple.” She was also expect- ed to see that each bridesmaid was net only duly provided with a sprig of rose mary, or a floral posy pinned to the breast-folds of her dress, but had a symbolical chaplet in her haad. Is many partsof Germany it is still cus tomary for the bridesmaids to bring the myrtle wreath, which they bave sub- scribed together (o purehase ou the nup tial eve, to the house of the bride, and to remove it from her head at the close of the wedding day. Afier this has been done, the bride is blind-folded, and the myrtle wreath being put it into her hand she tries to place it on the head of one ot her bridesmaids as they dance rouod her; for,in accordance with an old belief, whoever she crowns is sure to marry within a year from that date. As may be imagined, this ceremony i: ti.e scurce of no small excitement, each oridesmaid being uaturally anxious to follow the example of the bride, Re- ierving once more tothe bridal wreath od chaplet,it is still a current notion in meby parts of our own country that the bride in romoviog these wust take specie! cave that her bridesmaids throw | away every pin. Not only is it effiirm ed that mistortune will overtake the wide who retains even one pin used in in ber marriage toilet, but woe also to uids if they as their proapects of wilithereby be materially the hrideam cm, marringe ressened om ES A + Spm Paper Carpets.
